Hyperextended Elbow

I feel better today (only a little better but I am getting some range of motion back). And I think tomorrow it's going to be OK. Is your elbow feeling better?

If you have an escape planned and your thumb is not pointing upwards then I can understand you not tapping but if you are stuck then just tap.

Don't ever do this with the kimura. Kimura Casualties: The Silent Injurer Guerrilla Jiu-Jitsu Basically you dodged the bullet this time but if it had been a kimura you might have a ripped shoulder... Just tap against a kimura and heel hook. Never wait to feel the pain.

Yeah my thumb wasn't pointing upwards, ehhh my elbow is the same as it was

npeople should really learn to just tap if your only training...no reason to get hurt if your only training....when ever i roll if someone gets something locked in i tap before they crank it unless i know i can get out ..... but yea just wait it out a day or two and see how it feels dont train either

Oh the 'its not so bad' is only true until 2hours after training, happens to me once a month

Sometimes my partners get upset when I tap so soon. Bottom line is, i'm training to avoid getting into those submissions, not to see how long I can hold out against one.

I had mine badly tweaked in competition. It took 10 months to heal, and that's when I DID tap.

Good luck with your recovery.

I fail to understand how someone could be in a fully locked armbar for 20-30 seconds and not "feel anything" and then suddenly have the joint fail. You're lying or your partner was being very nice by not pulling down on it even though you'd given up the sub. In any event, R.I.C.E. works and get some anti-inflammatory cream. Also, be competitive when you haven't already lost. When you've already lost... you're just being dumb.

I hyperextended my elbow last night rolling, i got caught in an armbar, and I didn't tap for maybe 20-30 seconds (I didn't feel anything), until all of a sudden I felt an extremely sharp pain and it just bent the other way. I kept on going another maybe hour, hour and a half without any pain. I got home and I had no pain whatsoever. I then woke up around 3 a.m. not being able to straighten my elbow and pretty bad pain, I was just wondering what I could do for it to heal, without going to a doctor?

Best thing you can do is go see a doctor first to make sure it really is only hyperextended. I say 'only' as to that much worse can happen to it, i know it still isn't good. I know cause i've had both my arms hyperextended due to the same reason (being too hard headed and not tapping like you're supposed to in training lol)
anyways, if it's hyperextended the doctor may give you light pain meds for the inflamation (i was given naproxen)
but other than that they might wrap it, might not.
All you can do is let it rest and heal itself.

One more thing, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that elbow is gonna always give you problems now :/
being too hard headed sucks sometimes....

20-30 seconds is fucking ridiculous. If you didn't realise you'd been caught after maybe 5 seconds at the most, well, I'm not gonna call you an idiot but...

And I'm not referring to the onset of pain either. If you know you've been caught and there's no way out, don't force your partner to damage you. Just tap.

The worst part about a popped elbow is sleeping at night. It will wake you up everytime you move. Next time drop your ego and tap early.

I hate you TS. Something can hurt a little and get damaged a lot. Do you tap to blood chokes? Probably not since you can still breathe right?

in training i usually tap before my arms straight, if u r defending ur arm after it passes like that 90 degree point, u already did something wrong and there is no point, u should just tap and learn from the mistake instead of trying to fix the mistake by just powering out and getting hurt

Extremely competitive, and like i said i didnt feel anything until it happened, it is a bit swollen

i think your doing yourself a disservice, because your almost forcing your training partner to go full force on your elbow.

He didn't have my arm straight..

Harsh..hahah,actually no, to chokes ill tap out immediately,

Sorry about your arm, I hope its not too bad.

If it is locked in and you cannot counter within 5-10 sec, the probability is extremely high you are not getting out. Lesson learned, hopefully...

Lessons Learned :
1 Tap or snap (lol)
2 Lower the ego
3 Don't be a dumbass

I had to take today off and I think I will take tomorrow off, too. It's almost healed but it still hurts when I extend fully and it also hurts when I go to sleep.

I really hope it doesn't hurt or anything for many months after this. I feel like if I had to fight I could use it but man I wish I hadn't hyperextended it.

hope your elbow is feeling better, too.

So how are everyone's elbows? Hate to Necro an old thread, but just wanted to get an idea of how long i'm gonna be sidelined with my own hyperextended elbow. It was also armbarred, and the kid was way too enthusiastic about finishing it (he's only 14 and i think it was the first time he caught me, so i guess he just didn't want to lose it). Popped a few times and hurts to straighten it now. How long before you guys went back to training?

It will get better don't worry about it, if yu have really damaged it you know about it.
