Hunt is so deceptive with his pace

His punches look scary as fuck.

The way he has that snap with his punches.. I couldn't imagine taking one of those. I'd probably be put in a coma if that guy landed a glancing shot, hell, even if he missed, the air that goes by my head would probably put me to bed. That guy could probably punch a wall and the shockwave would put down an entire suburban area.

He isn't just all raw power either, he clearly is just one of those guys who can just hit hard, they naturally just have that power, but his technique is so damn good and that makes him 100x more dangerous, unlike Roy Nelson. Roy is mostly just a guy with serious raw power, whereas Hunt is a guy that clearly has that natural born raw power as well as great technique, that snap in his punches.. all technique.

To me, it looks like even when Hunt does get very tired, he still throws his punches just as hard and just as quick. He'll get tired, but he'll still try to fight at the same pace. He doesn't really get all zombie-like, like so many other fighters, like Chris Leben or BJ Penn for example.

I love the way he sets up his strikes, too, especially in his fight against Stefan Struve. I remember he was simply just tapping Struve's arms, then a little tiny punch to the body, just to create an opening and as soon as Struve left a little opening, Hunt fired a fucking haymaker at him.

You don't really see many MMA fighters create openings like that. You usually only see this kind of thing in Boxing. The only other fighter I've seen do this a bunch of times was Nick Diaz. They're pretty much just feints, his opponent will put their arms up to block their face and Nick (or some other fighters) will just tap your arms with a couple little punches, or they'll tap the arms a few times and then do one or two to the body and as soon as his opponent drops their hands just a little bit, BOOM, a random power punch to the head.

It's actually pretty fun to watch. The time Hunt did that to Struve is still fresh in my memory, I love seeing fighters mix it up like that, creating little openings like that.

Hunt is a scary dude.

He is just so great to watch. Such a highly entertaining fighter.

I would to. We've seen Ando do the same thing. Good strikers tend to roll just enough. And when your opponent doesn't throw combos, and instead relies on single-punch power, rolling and proper angles are your best friend.

And that's exactly why I bet Hunt U-3 Rounds. But that's just post-hoc gloating... because I felt it was 50/50 going in he'd even win, let alone actually tag Nelson under 3 :D

Ando? cmom..

i agree with ur logic though

he knows how to conserve energy and go the distance if he has to. i think serious grapplers will give him a hard time if they wear him down and force him to scramble more..

Yeah that's pretty true TS, I've been thinking the same thing.

Hunt is a scary dude.

This.

All of this.

He seems slow the way he walks around an tired almost but really hes pret fast and can go 5rds goin to war ? So yeah hes def deceptive w the pace an the way he fights

He looked fantastic. My eyes watered up when he bowed to the crowd afterwards lol.

War Hunt mates!!

Hunt is really something else. He won't ever win the title, but I'll be damned if his fights aren't some of the most fun to observe.

On a separate note, thinking about this fight and then thinking about the fact that JDS ate some of his really heavy shots - holy shit does JDS have a chin... I mean, to his detriment - you're probably better off passing out after one hard shot than taking 20-30 over the course of a fight but still...

I've noticed he's really agile for such a big tank. Hard to believe at nearly 300 lbs he can move like that.

It's true. Hunt is very good at switching things up and sudden acceleration. Combine that with his natural power and you have a very scary individual.

Seriously every time I watched Hunt fighting in the later rounds, he would appeared slow and tired. He kind of lure you in, then boom he goes 110mph on you with his strikes and don back to being slowed and tired again. Guys like Struve, Bigfoot, and Rothwell had a hard time adjusting to him.

During the Nelson fight, Brian Stann mention how when fighters got gotten used to Hunt, he switches styles in you, thus referencing Hunt deceptive pace. Awesome

Great fighter don't take opportunities. They create them.

I know what you're talking about. There are times during a fight where he looks like a sitting duck, and it might be over if the opponent unloads on him. And then he's like lol nope and dodges the big shot and fires back with his own like it was the 1st round.

Happened in the Bigfoot fight a lot, happened against Struve like others said

He's just has a masterful awareness of punches when he's on his game. To be fair, Nelson has a very linear style. But that doesn't take much away from the fact that he's massively dangerous and Hunt did a great job with his angles. And I think that allows him to conserve energy early and keep the pace consistent later.

I had called this fight Overhand vs Uppercut. This time.... uppercut won.
