A lot of people talk about the failure of the war on drugs, and I don't disagree, but I can't really think of a smooth way to end it. Should the president just declare it over and make dealing and buying every drug legal? Only some drugs? Should possession only be decriminalized? What would be the downsides of these solutions?

Well, it shouldn't be all at once. I think that we should start with the legalization and regulation of Marijuana. The taxes generated from that alone would be an amazing boon. We should study how that goes and tweak it wherever needed. Then we could look at the other harder drugs and implement the lessons learned.

Prohibition ain't workin' and it's just making the cartels richer.

We should keep big pharma away from the process completely. Nothing good would come from "pure profit driven thinking" being added to the mix. But that's just me.

It blows my mind that in this day and age people don't see the benefits of legalizing marijuana and MAKING MONEY off of it, in comparison to ruining people's lives over it. Are the decision makers we put in office really this out of touch?

the war on drugs is futile. currently, people can gain access to whatever drug they want, if they really wanted to. legalizing drugs does not mean that normal people are going to all of a sudden start shooting up heroin because it's legal. just like lots of people who never smoked are not picking up smoking weed in washington state or colorado just because it became legalized.

Right, that was kind of the question. So just weed? Would there not still be drug cartels if weed was legalized?

Hate to bring this up again, but I am at the point now where I think the continued harsh penalties and war on drugs is completely unethical.

In my political searches I sometimes stumble across news of ISIS videos and investigate. I found a video that was by far the sickest thing I have ever (sort of) seen in my life (I turned away as I could not deal with it). It was the most vile torture I could imagine being done by rival drug cartels -- sicker than anything ISIS has done.

It seems obvious to me that the "sky will fall" reefer madness folks have been proven wrong and wrong again but what happens to society from drugs. I am not at all convinced that hard drug use will go up, and if it does, it won't more than offset the benefits of reduced drug related crime.

Maybe I have just gone too emotional from the video, but seriously, these cartel fucks are as sadistic as ISIS.

Tax it. Treat addicts. Pardon people in jail for soft drug possession. The "war on drugs" is one of the biggest epic fails of our time.

I don't agree with the "war on drugs", one iota. However, if it goes away, what will be gone after. The gov makes lots of money off it, and they aren't going to let it go. Also, theres a lot of people who make their living off it, not just prisons and cops, that will be unemployed. Where do they go?

Drop the price down. Make it legal.

Remove the federal laws and let states deal with it however they see fit.

Causes of death due to substances is 1. Over eating. 2. Over drinking. 3. Over smoking cigarettes. 4. Over doing every other drug put together.

So legalise everything I say. The legal substances are doing all the killing DESPITE prohibition having zero effect on supply or demand (so it's not like it's because the illegal drugs are kept illegal that all they don't kill as much as food, cigs or alcohol).

While I don't agree with harsh drug laws the people that are breaking these laws still know the consequences. It's a cop out excuse for people that don't know how to follow the rules.

Legalize cannabis, psychedelics and cocaine, decriminalize possession of all others.

If the government doesn't tell us drugs are bad (mmmkay) then the whole country will be on heroin by the end of next week.

i think they should legalize them but using them voids health insurance or government assistance from any related health issues

its like prohibition, people are going to get it anyways. the only difference is that its going to be provided by violent criminals

i also dont like the idea of the government telling people what they can and cant put in their bodies. i have a "you can swing your fist around, as long as it doesnt hit anyone in the face" view of government. people have a right to treat themselves like shit imo

I would say to mr reagan " tear down these prison walls"

And to nancy, if you want to force morality onto the populus, you should consider the idea of free will.

1 Corinthians 10:13
No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

....
Different era i guess. Time to legalize marijuana at least.
