How to counter the JJ spinning elbow

Gus took his back a few times, but JJ escaped. So what else could he have done?
It is an attack that really lands a lot and does damage, so how do you think fighters can counter it?

Either take his back or get out of the way. Maybe move back and time a punch moving forward, but it's a very quick move.

Maybe do his own spinning elbow and try and catch Jones in the back of his head.

Rampage did a pretty good job avoiding the spinning elbows except for one I believe.

How crazy would it be if Gus countered it, and jumped on his back giving him a neck crank like the one that was similar to the Carmouche/Rousey fight.

The way Gus countered was pretty good (as long as he didn't eat elbow to the head, lol) he just couldn't make much use of it.

Someone like Cormier may try to use it and take him down.

Gus did seem to counter it pretty well by taking jones back but jones times it well and throws it fast... I went through a stage where I was working on it but I'm not crafty enough or fast enough and would miss and get smacked hard so I stopped trying fancy shit like that haha
