How often should you wash your gi?

How much do you guys stink? DOnt you wear an deodorants or something? I never trained BJJ but for the few years I did karate and awhile aikido, I washed it approx. twice a month. And its not my subjective opinion that it didnt smell while everybody thought differently. We got along very well and others would tell me in a heartbeat in my face if I smelled bad. When youre a hightbelt theres lots of falling down and catching so it would be noticable. Maybe you should consider why you smell so bad so quickly ?
I guess if you train everday hard you should wash it once a week or so but after each practice? thats kinda excessive IMO

Unlike Aikido and most (not all) Karate schools we actually train with resisting partners. Therefore we sweat a lot during each class causing the funk factor. You should try going to a Judo or BJJ Academy for a change. You will see.

Hell no! :)

It's a conscious decision. It's at Ralph Gracie's under Kurt Osiander. I love it. I visited every other school BEFORE I made that commitment. Here's why it's worth it to me:

1. Legit BB instruction.
2. I like Kurt.
3. 1 mile away from my house. I ride my bike.
4. I can train Muay Thai in the evening, if I want.
5. I can train another class or two or three later in the day, if I want.
6. Legit BB instruction. (Did I say that?)
7. The dollar amount doesn't bother me. It comes out to $4.50 per hour for me. Very affordable, considering I live in one of the top 5 most expensive cities in the world.

I'm very happy with my academy. :)

If you're paying $180 a month you fucked up a long time ag....nevermind.

I currently only have one gi but I would like to do an early morning class and then an afternoon class later. Would it be alright to use the same gi twice. At the moment I wash it after every class. Sorry for the noob question but I really don't wanna be that smelly guy in the class

Every class. No exceptions.

If you're training twice a day, every day? I'd suggest buying 3 more gis minimum, so you don't even have to wear them on consecutive days.

I have found that if you want to do more classes than you obviously need to get another couple of gi's. I have two and will cycle them being that I usually do three classes a week, 2 gi and 1 no gi.

when you wash your gi it washes out your jiujitsu dont do it bro

a gi is supposed to go from white to black over the years as your knowledge grows

Gotta wash it after every use. If you really look on the internet you can find some cheap Gi's, check under Judo also, basically the same thing and they cheaper sometimes. Suggest checking out BJJHQ.com they run good deals, just only 1 product a day. Usually once a week they will have a cheaper Gi.

Long time practicioner of Wado Ryu Karate and Japanese Jiu Jitsu, big difference. In Karate, you can wear a shirt underneath and get by with washing it every few classes, maybe spray a little fabrese. Not going to happen in Jiu-Jitsu. I wear a shirt underneath and usually change it out 3 times during a class and my Gi is still soaked by the end. I've got 4 Jiu Jitsu Gi's and a Kurtka that I rotate out.

Does it work, by the way? I have a few friends who use that and even when they wash their gis, I feel like I'm rolling with a skunk. :icon_chee

Sounds like they are using too much. With the two cups added to the wash I do not get any residual smell.

You're using it every time you wash? I soak my new gi's in it for 45-60min in order to help the colors set.

Wash your gi you nasty bastard. I don't want to catch nasty shit because you refuse to wash your gi.

BRO get out of that $180 school!!

When you live in a city like San Francisco, you don't really have much of a choice for cheaper. At least it's cheaper than Marcelo Garcia, his place in New York is $220.

Pff you should bring 5-10 gis to practice one for practice and the others for each roll, you cant ever be too careful.

DON'T USE YOUR GI TWICE WITHOUT WASHING IT!

You'll be the stinky guy in the room. It's very disrespectful/inconsiderate to NOT wash your gi.

I JUST got over ringworm. I'll be back to training on Monday. When my wife asked me how I got it, I figured it was the stinky guy at class that day.

So, I pay for training every month in San Francisco. It costs me $180. I'm cool with that. What's not cool, is me paying ANY amount of money, and then, not being able to train, because some Dirty @$$ person decides it's ok to be nasty.

Please don't do it.

My personal solution: own 5 BJJ gis for training once per day, M-F. Own 2 Judo Gis for 2 nights of Judo. Own 2 extra cheap gis...just in case.

That's great if you have lots of money to spend on gi's. I presume TS is lacking in funds or he would have just bought a new gi.

Obviously your rich if you have 7 gis and pay 180 for classes.

You don't have to be rich to attain usable gis. I pay less than $100 a month for BJJ classes, and I own 4 gis. Two of them are double-weave judo gis (that I spent less than $60 for each), one is an older single-weave Judo gi from back in the day ($40 at the time I purchased it), and the last is a Fuji single Weave ($70 at the time I purchased it). Now the TS doesn't may not necessarily need that many, but he'll definitely benefit from a second gi.

Point being: Taking a few minutes to shop around from time to time can net you a great deal on usable equipment. It's worth it when your personal hygiene (and the health of your training partners) hangs in the balance.

Lack of funds is TS's problem. Getting Staph because of some disgusting unhygienic slob is my problem. A cheap adidas judo gi is not expensive at all, I seriously doubt anyone but the most destitute and homeless is unable to afford one. Using a gi twice in one day is unacceptable, a guy in my gym did it just once and I could smell him from the other end of the room. Not only does it stink, that shit is going to get smothered all over your face when you're on the bottom. Extraordinarily disgusting.

what school r u at?

don't you guys know anything?!?!?
if you wash your gi, you wash away all of the jiujitsu knowledge.

So guys... Wash it every time with White vinegar? Would it destroy the gi fabric?

Every time would probably be overkill. I know I said I used it twice a month, but that was a lie - probably closer to once a month. Bleach would be very hard on the fabric; vinegar is acidic, but is very mild and it will be thoroughly diluted. Your gi's will be fine.

Your gi should be clean every time you step on the mat. If you're not doing this then you are putting your training partners health in jeopardy.

There is absolutely no grey area in this.
