How often did/do you hard spar?

Anyone else’s gym just straight up fight club once a week?

It really sucks when you’re the smallest in the gym. And the people better than you go hard, but the people worse than you go light. There’s no winning in the gym for me lol
 
2-3x a camp. If someone is fighting in 6 weeks we’ll go hard twice. We’ll sneak in a 3rd hard session if it’s an 8 week camp. Outside of training camp we don’t go hard to the head. We’ll smash the shit out of legs and body but take it medium to the head.
 
Back in the mid-late 00s I was hard sparring a couple times a month.
Saturday after class we’d spent an hour or so sparring and often after just fun screwing around trying silly shit we’d occasionally go hard.

You should be talking to the coaches if larger and more experienced people are going hard on you without any real reason aside from ‘sparring bro’

That’s just the culture here. I have to actively duck people if I don’t feel like taking brain damage that day
 
That’s a bad culture imho.
If other students can’t use control against smaller/less experienced partners they shouldn’t be sparring with other students imho
It’s a pro fighter gym and the coach is barely around lol

Ah the "gym heroes" we had a few of them you'd show up and they'd hit you with the old "Hey man wanna do some light sparring" and then spend 8 rounds trying to knock your head clean off. My gym had two or three of those guys, they are the same guys that complain when you crack them back full power.

Plenty of gyms have pro fighters that don’t act like douches, and coaches who are actually present during class…
We got like 2 gyms on the island with high level fighters and I belong to both of them lol.
So many other places I would love to train at if I were in the mainland

come back anytime. I could also put you in contact with some other really great gyms, especially for strikers
 
When I used to train at my old country of stay then whenever the trainer told us too and however hard ect the trainer told us to or the sparring partner started going. I don't remeber exactly how often but maybe 1-2 a week.

At the new gym I did a bit of work at and am planing to sign up again, my hip is hurt currently, I take the kickboxing class and there's always 2-4 rounds of some type of sparring can be just body shots or low kicks or simply sparring and most people go medium intensity. Might have some spaz rarely.

Then on Thursday evening there's a class where it's 10 rounds of just sparring. Just switching partners and sparring. I love that class. Sparring usually is not too hard. You can also talk to people bout intensity. I guess I love it cause it's not a pro class and if I'm in shape I feel I can do really well and can have fun. And sparring generally increases my skills and fitness the most out of anything. Am not a fan of hard sparring though.

Then got a buddy I used to sometimes meet to train and he always always wants to spar. Since we know each other the intensity and trust is perfect. Noone takes it personal if a shit comes Trough a bit harder and I never get hurt from him and can communicate anything. So perfect training.

If you wanna be good at kickboxing sparring is where it's at. However you might take some damage till you figure out how to keep the spars friendly with strangers.

I wish my hip was not hurting. Hoped to go back to training after this 2 week vacay. Got a doctor's appointment for my hip. Last doc said it was fine. No way, since yesterday I barely can walk. Most days it's fine. I should carefully hea my hip issue and figure out what it is. Then I'm def down to spar some noobs every Thursday, if I'm any lucky and work gives me time. 10 roubds of noobs. Too lovely. And I'm a nice guy I try to not hurt anyone. I just love live practicing skill. It's a ego boost also.
 
And the couple times in the past people hit me with full force or went to war at sparring I consider it valuable experience.

I probably have been rocked from shots 50 x in my life. My definition of rocked is you punch me and my vision goes black for a second.
 
Not at all right now. Who knows when I'll want to again. MMA gyms, imo, have incidental hard sparring all the time.

When I was the most serious about martial arts, and training the most, I sparred hard once a week, and I thought it helped a lot.

And I don't think it mattered the rules. I sparred at one place where we didn't wear shin pads, and we only had small, quarter pound gloves, so we generally went light to the head but hard to the body. People would get TKO'd from liver shots and leg kicks every week, but only rarely did it get wild to the head.

But I always felt like I needed a week to heal up. If I had brain damage from MMA gyms or tore up shins from brain damaged fight club sparring, I'd get timid or hurt if I went too much.

So, once a week for me, when I was at my best, gym hopping open sparring nights.
 
I dunno that I've ever really hard sparred. Some guys hit harder than others but I've rarely met a real asshole and on the few times I have I'm outta there quick. And I've never said "let's go hard on this one" I don't think.

So fat old man wuss me is not giving any advice. But I'm curious, when you hard spar is it like 4 rounds with someone and that's it for the night or for like a 90 minute session are you going full blast with a bunch of different opponents?
