How much (if any) of our accepted currency is counterfeit?

Just something I was wondering about earlier today as I was pulling some cash out of the ATM.

Obviously some counterfeit bills get picked up by retail outlets. Those bills then get deposited into banks.

Now, I'm not aware of the ins and outs, but I understand that at some point these bills will be checked in efforts to filter counterfeit currency out of the system, and they will be removed from circulation.

So I gotta wonder, how much (if any) of the counterfeit currency that has made it into circulation was just so fucking good that it has gone undetected, and in fact will go permanently undetected. That is, it's just part of our money now.

Anyone have any ideas on this or know any information that could shed light on the question?

Interesting. 62 fucking million dollars. If that's how much was removed, it makes you wonder how much went undetected.

And it makes you wonder how much counterfeit currency is floating around in circulation right now, and how many counterfeit bills have passed through your own hands unknowingly.
apparently it was like disgustingly bad after the Civil War, like over half the money was counterfeit

I got sent this $5 in the mail by Nielsen (the TV Ratings company) last year to respond to some survey. Straight up, I swear that bill was fake. It didn't feel like Linen (or cotton or whatever the f they print money on) but paper, the colors were off, but it did have all those newer security measures.

On a side note, To Live and Die in LA goes mad hard, never forget

It's all counterfeit. Fort Knox is empty

I remember getting a bill like that too, actually. I still wonder if that was a real bill or not.

That was some sophisticated shit. You see, THAT'S the kind of operation where I'm like, okay, maybe the guys who are working on that level are able to make some shit that can escape detection.

I used to work at Hollywood Video as a shift leader and one of the guys who worked under me said he knew someone who was making counterfeit money, but the guy was printing the shit out on an inkjet printer. According to the dude I worked with, the guy would sell people like a hundred bucks in counterfeit dollars for $40 in real cash.

I have always wondered if the story was even true, and if it was, how legit that shit looked and how successful people were with spending it.

I imagine a very tiny percentage. Only 3% of currency in circulation are held in cash form, which is the main source of counterfeits.

Our money isn't backed by gold so that wouldn't mean anything if it were true.
I don't know that's what my conspiracy theory coworker always says

tbh, I don't imagine the average cashier even checks it if isn't at least a 20 or a Hundo

You could probably pass fake 5s all day

When I spent that bill at the gas station, I was hoping she didn't check she didn't even remotely give it a second look haha

always funny that so many people don't know that 'follow the yellow brick road' was referring to the debate between the Gold Standard and Bimetallism back in the Populist days

He's loaded with em. Moon is an alien spaceship, retilians live under us, Queen Elizabeth is a lizard person....etc
I knew a guy like that once. He always said he got super secret info because his brother was on a city council.

Apparently that's because it costs more than $5 to make a counterfeit bill. So 5s/10's are almost never done.

I wonder why that would be. I wouldn't think the materials would be that costly.

i always like giving random other nation currency and see if they catch it

I still have mad 1 and 2 euro coins from living in Germany, i'll randomly try to pass em and see if they catch me

The other day I did this on accident, I somehow received a Kuwaiti/UAE Dinar coin or some ish as change, didn't realize it until I went to the Drive Thru and passed it off. They didn't catch it either haha

I worked in the SD county money vault back in the 90s.
I had friends while at SDSU that worked at the cash cage at Viejas or Pechanga

never thought to ask them haha
