How many title defenses to be considered a dominant champion?

Its a weird one.

There are more requirements than there were a decade or 15 years ago.

I remember when people used to call Rich Franklin a dominant champion and I saw the UFC refer to him as "longtime middleweight champion" on countless occasions.

He had 2 title defenses and held the belt a little over a year.

Nowadays 2 title defenses still isn't anything to sniff at but having the belt for a year and some change is the average title reign, a little on the shorter side even.

Quality over quantity for me. Islam finishing Charles and Volk is enough for me to consider him a dominant champ.

No magic number.. when there is a general consensus the reigning champ cleaned out the division ie Silva, GSP, Nunes, Jones, MM, etc… when the question starts becoming “Who’s left?”

5 is a good number. 3 is too few for a "dominant champ."

Who you defend against is also a factor. If you fight the top of the division you are more dominant than someone that defends only against people moving up from a lower weight

Truly dominant? Probably 5. Preferably against 5 different challengers.

Was the Franklin thing because of the chaos that was mw for the past five years at that time? I mean, it was vacated for four years. Or is it that Goldie and Rogan were prone to hyperbole. Rogan, less so then, than he is now. But your point is well taken.

I think the equivalent today is people who don't really understand fighting on here claiming people are the GOAT after barely starting their career.

5, since you've probably wiped out most of the top 10 if you include beating the champion and beating a contender or 2 on your way to the belt. Most fighters can't even achieve it since it's so difficult.
