How many times should a fighter who does about 5 days a week at training be spending doing weights.

I know this varies on person to person because everyone recovers differently. For example Sean Sherk does 6 times a week weight training on top of his regular MMA training.

Is 6 days a week too much weight training if your a natural fighter (normal testosterone levels :icon_chee)

It depends on the intensity of your classes. Are you doing BJJ, boxing, muay thai, all 3? Whats your schedule like?

You have to take into account all the physical activity your doing (and not doing) such as your job, other hobbies, etc.

I know if Im hitting BJJ hard 5 times a week I can maybe hit the weights hard one time a week, maybe, otherwise your overtraining the christ out of yourself.

If you want to do both (lift weights, and do mma) you have to prioritize. 3 days of mma 2 days of weights for a month. Then do 5 days of BJJ and no weights for a month. Then do 2 days BJJ 3 days of weights etc etc. And you gotta make sure your diet supports this much energy expedenture otherwise you will end up overtrained, injured, or both.

Stopping weights completely for a month is a terrible idea.

1-2 times a week is necessary to maintain progress.

Yes do not stop for a month. Consistency is a must. As to how many times you are exactly right about it being different for different people. Between 2-4 I would say is pretty common, but pay attention to your body. Overtraining is real and you will loose out in the end if you over-do it.

How long is a piece of string? It depends on so many factors: how many times you train MMA, your age and general fitness, your lifestyle - job, relationships and so on.

Personally, I aim to train BJJ, Thai Boxing and Kali twice a week and Lift three times a week. This is dictated by my work schedule; if I was able to get on the Mats three times a week I'd drop my Gym sessions to twice a week. But I have to play the hand I was dealt.

Newbie Mistake; never compare yourself to a professional fighter who A)has great genetics B)does nothing BUT train and C)is probably Juiced off his tits(allegedly).

+1

giving yourself a break from weights does not hault progress, it enhances it. If you added 10 lbs to your bench every week for a year and you started at a 1RM of 225 you'd be benching over 700. You have to wave your intensity with both martial arts and weights

so you're saying TS should take a few months per year off from weight training or else he could be benching 700lb soon which would be bad?

i do 3 times a week and many fighters i know either :

3x split
or
2x full body

It's good to take a week or so off of weight lifting every few months, but stopping weight training for a month at a time is a dumb idea
