It's already been over a year since he won the belt. It doesn't look like a fight is close and it seems like he will make the UFC jump through hoops to get a deal done. So... How long will the UFC let him hold the belt hostage before they strip it from him?

I think if he doesn't defend this year he needs to be stripped. I remember they didn't strip Cruz for like 3 years, but that too long. Thoughts?

The fights are there for him, he just needs to fight.

Well, the UFC was down with the Floyd fight... so it's not all Conor's fault... & then his opponent just got chose in October... so it's not really that excessive if they make the fight in March/April with Tony like they've been saying.

UFC earnings are looking like a record breaking year... so that kind of tells me there's no way in hell they ever considered Conor for 219. They want his PPV to boost next year's profits.

I guess UFC wants another boxing paycheck and they let Conor stay as a champ because of promoting

Sadly.... as long as they think it will financially benefit them.

Its simple, how much media attention & money will the UFC gain by keeping Conor as champion vs. how much will Tony pull in if they promote him to full champion?

Whether Conor goes back into boxing or returns to the Octagon for the trilogy vs. Nate, a unification with Tony or MEGAFIGHT with GSP all of these fights generate more publicity & money with Conor still being recognised as champ.

I don’t disagree with the sentiment of your post per se.........but let’s not forget it’s in everyone’s interest for the UFC to do well financially.

Hopefully not much longer he is just taking the p*ss at this point.

They should have put an end to this long ago.

Defend your belt within 5 months or it's declared vacant no exceptions no more games.

Pretty accurate. Businesses are not looking for enormous deposits into their bank account on 12/30 when they already have record profits.

Here is what I think should and probably will happen. Khabib and Edson are fighting on 12/30. By Mid February then I'd say, one of 2 things will have happened. Either Conor/T-Ferg will be booked, or Conor will be stripped and T-Ferg will be promoted to actual champ and will defend against the winner of Khabib/Edson.

The GSP fight and the Mayweather/Conor fight added nicely to the bottom line no doubt. But it is also clear the UFC would still have made plenty without either of those fights. Particularly when you consider that numerous other fights never took place due to those shenanigans. I think that fact, coupled by the general frustration with having those divisions held up, will mean the UFC will be a little less tolerant of those antics moving forward.

In 2018, I am optimistic that Conor will either be defending or not fighting, and that GSP will either be fighting Woodley or not fighting. And honestly, either of those scenarios is just fine with me.

Still can’t believe he’s been a champion since 2015 and hasn’t defended a title once.

He´s fighting in spring 100%.

He's never fighting in the UFC again 100%

(fixed that subject line for ya TS)

The problem with McGregor is that even if you sign him a deal to fight in say June, after that how long will it be before they can convince him to fight again, another year? another two years? My fear is the long term. Suppose he holds the belt for 6 years and only defends two or three times. That is a nightmare scenario. It basically holds the division hostage for a long period of time.

Such an original thread... I seriously assumed this was a white belt thread, but TS is a 2008 account. Sad.
