How long does it take to develop good defensive grappling?

If a kickboxer wants to fight in the UFC. How long do they have to practice submission and takedown defense as well as knowing when to scramble back up to their feet?

In this scenario, the fighter has no interest in grappling but just avoiding and escaping locks and subs. Can a person learn this in 1 year with a private instructor before they are UFC ready?
All fights start on the feet, but what can you do if you can't stuff a takedown?

Depends on who the person is. I will say that defensive grappling seems to get picked up quicker than offensive grappling.

Depends. Carlos Condit has been fighting for over a decade, and he still doesn't defend takedowns.
Carlos was very competent off his back so I think rather than focus on getting good TDD he just wanted to be able to fight anywhere.
And Cro Cop had world class TDD inside a year of training. So it varies by person.
Cro Cop, yes he trained BJJ with Werdum for a while, trained to never put himself in a situation where he was on his back. This a great sprawl was a necessity to actually take full advantage of his striking prowess.

Chesty could have you ready to grapple Japs in record time ;)

How long is a piece of string.

Training only guarantees one thing. You will improve. That's it. It does not guarantee you will be world-class or even elite no matter how hard you train.

Gimme the best wrestling coaches in the world and train me for 10 years I will still get shat on by some freak Russian kid that started wrestling 2 years ago.

This notion..."oh give him 1 year of grappling and he will be a UFC champion" is ridiculous.
Yes some athletes have it and they pick it up very fast.
Yes some athletes are freaks but we just saw Greg Hardy look like a fish out of water off his back against a top 20 fighter after 3 years (minumim) of training and we saw Nate the A-Level Athetle get slept in boxing by a YouTuber.

It's not a simple matter of training to be elite. It's a combination of training and specific biomechanics that are genetic and you are either born with them or not.

1 year is enough time to learn more than the basics, but it definitely varies from person to person. Then there are fighters who’ll grapplefook you no matter how good your TDD is.
