One of the first "MMA" fights(Ali vs Inoki), that is correctly regarded as the shittiest garbage that has ever been a thing made an asston of money:It’s always been a thing, it’s not going anywhere.
From what I remember, there was a shitload of difficulty in negotiations the whole time, mostly from Ali's side, including whether it was an exhibition or not, and then what kind of moves were allowed, especially concerning the ground. One of the first "MMA" fights(Ali vs Inoki), that is correctly regarded as the shittiest garbage that has ever been a thing made an asston of money:
"The fight was watched by an estimated 1.4 billion viewers worldwide,[13][16] including more than 54 million viewers in Japan.[17] In the United States, the fight sold at least 2 million or more pay-per-view buys on closed-circuit theater TV.[15] At a ticket price of $10,[18] the fight grossed at least $20 million (inflation-adjusted $100 million) or more from closed-circuit theater TV revenue in the United States."
Gimmick fights have been around for decades (really, centuries). It might fall out of fashion for a while, but it will never go away completely.
We'll never know the real story, there are 100 different versions. Whole thing turned into just repeated falling kicks from Inoki to Ali's leg, then had to be stood up again. Over and over and over and over. It was awful
