He became champ after being choked unconscious

In his 3 bouts prior to losing his title to a noticeably out of shape lightweight(BJ Penn) Hughes defended his welterweight title against the likes of

Frank Trigg (2 - 5 in the UFC and he had never even fought in the org prior to fighting Hughes)

Gil Castillo (1 - 2 in the UFC and he was 1 - 1 in the UFC when he fought Hughes)

Sean Sherk

In his 3 bouts prior to losing the title to GSP,Hughes fought

Joe Riggs (was 2 - 1 in UFC at the time and is 5 - 5 in the UFC overall)

Royce Gracie (40 years old)

BJ Penn (Hughes is 1 - 2 vs Penn which makes you wonder if Hughes just got lucky that night)

Not to mention,he's been stopped twice in under 30 seconds by Dennis Lloyd Hallman

Neither fighter , in my opinion, is "overrated". During their respective era's both men were the pinnicale of their division and were the best MMA fighters in the world. We live now in an age where we have seen mixed martial artists with a bit more talent and higher elevated skills naturally, and thus because of this, certain ignorant people will make such a claim that Hughes and or Franklin were overrated.

Rich is only overrated because people hate Anderson Silva (who destroyed Franklin twice to reign over the MW division for so long.) So haters HAVE to put down Silva's competition to make him look bad.

Who's been calling Franklin overrated? I haven't seen it. Both guys (Hughes especially) are legends and deserve muchos respect.

Since when is Rich Franklin overrated? Or even rated at all on this site?

What are Rick Franklin's best wins?

What are Matt Hughes' best wins?

+ Matt Hughes ruled a much better division. It's pretty simple

Neither guy is overrated.

Franklin was one of the prototypes for modern MMA fighters with no base who could do it all. (Post Shamrocks)

Matt Hughes was the first true dominant wrestler in MMA under LHW.

News to me. I haven't seen people call either fighter overrated. Both competed with the best of their respective competition.

While I really dislike Matt and I love me some Rich.
We gotta admit Matt was the undisputed best guy on his division for a while, after beating Penn, Sherk and GSP, while Rich was considered the number one guy, was he really? The competition on his division was more spread over the world and you can only wonder if Anderson could have done the same to him 2 years before he did.

How are they both overrated? They were just the best at that time then a long came GSP and anderson. It happens eventually that the best get knocked of there perch at some stage.

only Anderson and (maybe also Machida) haters claim Franklin was overrated.

Franklin of yesteryear still hangs with the majority of fighters in 205 and 185, I was never a huge huge fan of his...but likeable guy...dedicated fighter...not the best but definately one of them and would still be today

in 10 years, people will be calling Jon Jones overrated. Some are already saying it. MMA fans are simpletons with no sense of context or history.

Matt Hughes finished his career 45-9 and defended his belt something like 7 times. He is probably one of the top 10 mixed martial artists of all time.

Yeah, that explain why Frank freaking Trigg got a title shot like twice in that better divition

As opposed to Evan Tanner, Loiseau and Nate Quarry lol.

Again, what are Rich's best wins? Compare them to Hughes.
