Is it with a clenched fist? is it with hands opened and fingers extended?

Fingertip to fingertip... includes the hands and the back which is hardly applicable for reach in mma. Should be shoulder to first knuckle. And they should have leg reach in mma too
Agree to an extent; shoulder width matters too, because you're rarely standing parallel to your opponent with the front side of your torso.
(Especially if your name is St-Pierre or [Wonderboy] Thompson).

Yea but back width isn’t even as arm length when it comes to effective reach. I’d rather have longer arms than a wider back. If anything back width could be a seperate category

Jon Jones is about 76 inches tall, but his "reach" is over 84.5 inches. That's silly. A shoulder to first knuckle measurement for reach is the actual reach measurement, a stat that means something.
