How is Jon Jones not more impressive than Conor McGregor?

In all honesty, Jones is probably the most impressive fighter of all time. He's just a douche bag so he gets a lot of hate.
 
Of course Jones is better, are you kidding me. No one things mcgregor is better p4p than Jones. If/when he beats aldo that might be a conversation.

On the other hand, Jones has been stripped of his title and through his own actions is incapable of even competing. This is why everyone is talking about mcgregor. He's impressive in the cage and he's got his life in order.

Yeah, it appears that is exactly what is happening.
In over 20 years of following this sport, I have never seen anything close to the hype of McGregor. Frankly, I can't think of a comparable case in any sport.
It is fascinating how susceptible people are to irrational fanaticism. We are so hung up on anointing someone as "GOAT" that we pretty routinely throw rationale in the dumpster.
Props to McGregor and the UFC for this feat of intellectual sorcery.
 
Who said he isn't? People saying that Conor is something we haven't seen before mean his quick rise to the top, not that he's better than everyone else that came before .

That's how I see it anyway.

Even in terms of quick rise Conor is not the fastest riser of all time. Nobody can match the quick rise of Brock Lesnar. He went from 0 pro fights to UFC heavyweight champion, defended the belt, then lost the belt in 8 fights. He also sold more tickets and was a bigger draw than McGregor.

To be fair mate that's a rather silly comparison imo, brock was already world famous, ncaa championship wrestler and a physical specimen. Conor was a skinny young man from Ireland who came from nowhere.

No disrespect to brock though, what he achieved was great.

Welcome to Conordog. A few months ago Aldo was a GOAT candidate and the most complete fighter in the sport. Now he's a whiny can who fakes injuries to duck Conor. It's a brave new world of nuthugging folks..

My point is that Conor is not #1 at anything. He is a great fighter who probably has not met his potential yet but there are many fighters better in all areas than Conor. Lesnar sold more tickets and achieved more in a short time than any fighter in history. Out of current fighters Bones is by far the alpha on the roster but Ronda, Aldo, AND OTHERS have also done more than McGregor.

Conor is not some special thing we have never seen before, not in any area. Not in ticket sales, not in fast rise, not in overall talent, he doesn't fall #1 anywhere.

McGregor strongest skill is his striking and even that is not #1 the best striking we have ever seen. Anderson Silva won 16 consecutive UFC fights, finishing 14 times.
 
You can be impressed with more than just records or technical accomplishments. You can be impressed by someone's integrity and ability to back up everything he's saying.

- Jones declined to fight the undersized Weidman when he volunteered to be a replacement.

- Jones declined to fight the undersized Sonnen when he volunteered to be a replacement.

- Jones used to claim he would fight anyone, anytime.

- Conor opened an eye and remarked, "They're all the same." Then proceeded to take the fight against Mendes and win by 2nd round TKO.

What planet are you on TS? There's no debate about the fact that Jones is more impressive than McGregor.

At this point you could argue that Jones has the more impressive resume, but Conor is much earlier into his UFC career than Jones. In terms of fighting ability Conor may be on a level we havent seen before in the sport, not even from Jones.

Conor may also be the biggest draw in UFC history, drawing the highest gate ever for a UFC event in the US at $7M, far more than any event headlined by Lesnar, only the 50k stadium show in Toronto headlined by GSP has done higher numbers. It also seems like UFC 189 got close to 1M buys and considering that he wasnt even champ yet and was fighting Mendes on two weeks notice he may be the biggest PPV draw ever aswell.

"Conordog"...very well said. That is pretty close to what Sherdog has become.
You are right about Aldo too. The way he is constantly disrespected on here lately blows my mind just as much as the Conor hype does. I can't recall a fighter going from one of the most respected to the most hated without losing, and for virtually no reason at all, seemingly overnight the way Aldo has. And it happened prior to the rib injury. It was as if he regressed from legend to can the moment the McGregor fight was announced.
If Aldo hasn't earned his place among the all time best, then nobody has.
 
It is unfortunate that a thread like this has to exist.
Let's talk when Conor gets a legit belt and has some defenses.

Bones is 27 (turned 28 today)
McGregor is 27

Bones has had 22 fights
McGregor has had 20 fights

They are almost the exact same age with the exact same amount of fights. The only difference is Bones has been champion since he was 23 and successfully defending while McGregor was trying to put together a skillset sufficient to compete in the UFC.

You say at "this stage of their UFC career". Well guess what, it would take McGregor into his 30's to get to where Bones is at age 27. That is how big the gap is between Bones and everyone else.

Bones has fought 16 times in the UFC by age 27
McGregor has fought 6 times in the UFC by age 27

Assuming Bones never fights again, it would take McGregor, fighting every 6 months like clockwork, until he was 32 to reach 16 UFC fights.
