How good was prime Gary Goodrige ?

I mean, the thread asked 'How good was prime Gary Goodrige?' not 'How beloved was Gary Goodrige?' He coulda been a fan favorite but he wasn't a particularly good fighter

fair assessment

I try to help him save face though considering he is suffering now because of the way he fought then

It was from exhaustion against Don Frye, all three of their fights are spectacular btw.

I'm a huge Goodridge mark, to me he was the ultimate bad ass at the time. He took on Fedor, Nog and Yvel on like a weeks notice I think. He was never afraid to mix it up with anyone but he had shit conditioning and he was very muscular so he gassed even in fights he won. Definitely a legend of the sport.

He put some pro wrestler in the hospital for a while after uppercutting him to the face a billion times. Did the same in the rematch too. Good old Pride, they were determined to kill someone in the ring.

Nope. His losses to Don Frye are Submission (Position) and Submission (Exhaustion). It was against Mario Neto in Vale Tudo. If I recall correctly he was frustrated about something and just left the ring.

Edit - Apparently he was sick, and pooped his shorts.

Ha, oh yes his Vale Tudo fights. I only recently went back to watch some of them. Missed this one though. Him crushing the Pedro's balls with his feet was both inventive and disturbing.

Did ok in the early Prides (knocked out Taktarov) but really should have retired a lot earlier, I believe he isn’t in good shape now after a lot of knock outs
He lives in my area and I have run into him. I have him as a friend on FB and know his cousin from a job a long way back. Stopped him to say hi and that I was a fan. Sadly he looked me in the eyes and asked "Do I know you?" and he was really asking, like as if we went to high school or something like that. He has memory issues and more. Super nice guy.

Yeah I read he has been diagnosed with CTE. Dude had a bad run at the end of his MMA career, got knocked out a lot and also copped a few KOs in K1 as well, sad to see.

STORYTIME !!!!

So Gary is from my hometown, this is about 15 years ago or so... I am working in an electronics store when gary comes in and I said i was a huge fan etc etc ...me and my friend from work used to watch pride together and go to work the next day all hungover and tired, So at this point we are fan girling ...

He pulls out a digital camera and asks me if i can fix this issue hes having ... I turn it on and theres a picture of a naked woman in bed.
He says "nevermind that dont look at it " and we just continue to fix the problem.

It was hilarious and one of my favorite memories ever at that job

He did give us this
TightDarkAlligator-max-1mb.gif

came here for this

I love Gary Goodridge, and he was a beast at times, but he wasn't overly motivated. He quit multiple times in fights. He has the only loss that I know of on Sherdog fight finder by Submission (No apparent reason).
That’s fucking awesome! Not for a fighter obviously, just a funny random stat.

And agreed, funny guy and genuine NHB legend, decent fighter but had his flaws.

Hahaha that’s a cool story bro, no sarcasm :)

Go on Gary lad.

If I'm not mistaken, he was a pro arm wrestler before getting into kickboxing/mma. Dude has some high profile wins in both. JBG disciple for his entire career and he's paying the price for it now.

He was very strong. Remember when Valentijn Overeem tried to kimura him and he just powered out of it?

Just skills were too far behind the next generation of guys. By 2000 he was already sort of obsolete in skill set but he kept fighting way way way way way beyond that. It was really the k-1 fights that did all the damage, the fights with Jerome and Mighty mo and so on,those guys nearly killed Gary. Im not even playin around. Its a sad thing, very hard to watch.

The old timers get u derrated because of their records, but those were cut during different times.
