How good a singer was Kurt Cobain?

How good a vocalist was he?

Amazing. Want proof? Ask everyone you know to sing bout a girl and see if anyone nails it or if they puddle of mud it.

Not like how you'd be taught to do anything in proper music school but the guy would use his voice to complete guitar keys and harmonies and was totally marching to the beat of his own drummer

Good shout.

Did you see Jack do his EVH tribute on SNL last night?
I didn’t watch it live, but saw it today and I really enjoyed his set. I also really enjoyed how he changed some of the Ball and Biscuit lyrics to reflect what’s going on in the world currently— because I think a pandemic and unemployment are certainly worth singing the blues about. Did you like his performance?
As far as vocals, sometimes it’s better to have a rawness to it than a polished sound. Tom Waits famously called the cover of “Ol 55” that the Eagles did “antiseptic.” And he’s right, the Eagles are just so polished-sounding. Tom’s vocals have an emotion, power, and honesty that a band like the Eagles just doesn’t. Tom’s songs are raw and jagged, and Kurt was like that too in a way.

Yeah, I did. I was never much of a Jack fan apart from Seven Nation Army (which we all have to love), it wasn't extremely political last night so it was good. He's had that guitar with the 3 humbuckers for a while. My tastes have changed a bit over the years, I don't really listen to death metal much anymore which I was when White Stripes first were popular so I might start listening to more of him to see.

Mods moved this thread to the Arcade? That’s weird.

I love the White Stripes, I highly recommend. But I’m a big fan of the blues, and I loved Jack’s playing as soon as I heard it. He stays true to the blues and rock but plays it differently, without sounding like an Eric Clapton clone or something. Give their music a try—if you like Seven Nation Army, check out that whole “Elephant” album. To me, it’s a masterpiece. I view it the same way people view “Raw Power” by Iggy and the Stooges, or something like that.

Thank you. I'll give it a whirl in the car this week. I've become a bit more eclectic of late so I'll definitely give it a go. I'm not even a gigantic Van Halen fan but I appreciated him doing that, he has a new fan. I hadn't thought about him in forever.

Ok.. this is probably the end of the world tbh..

We've sort of found something sherdog agrees on and we're also in the arcade..

Well.. it was fun (kind of) guys!

This thread seems better suited to the war room than the arcade imo

I'm a huge Nirvana fan but as a pure singer Kurt was terrible. Then again that was part of the appeal.

I'd like to hear other big name singers cover Nirvana songs the same way the originals sound.

If you're judging it by the Madison Ave, corporate way, very bad. If you're someone who cares about the emotion of the person and what their own lyrics mean to them?

He did the job as well as he could.

That's a good film, I recommend it. Goes into his upbringing and how he formed Nirvana.

Nirvana was amazing and Kurt had very good vocals. Thier music was great, in my opinion.

He had some good power behind his screams. The last 30 seconds of SLTS is metal AF.
