How fast can you run 5km?

I started doing 5km runs on the running machine at my local gym.

My first time doing it, it took me: 33:30 minutes. I was determined to get it below 30 mins. My second time trying, I missed out by seconds!! I was sprinting towards the end (other ppl in the gym must have thought I was crazy!), but got it at 30:10.

Next time, I got it at 29:00. and tonight, I got it at 29:40 .... (been eating a bunch of junk food recently and got a bit complacent)

How fast can you guys do it??

The world record in at around 12:30 ... which is f**king insane!!!
 
In my experience, I run distances quite a bit slower on a treadmill. I've never tried to do a 5k on a treadmill. The last time I did I ran exactly 5km was about 2 years ago and it took me about 23 minutes. I'm in equally mediocre shape right now, so probably about the same.

That;s pretty damn fast ... at the end of my 5km run, I am literally dripping in sweat and my t-shirt has changed color.
 
My best time was slightly off 25 min. I've never hit that time ever again, the closest I came to after that was around 27-29min
 
I ran one when I was 12, did it in ~29m. Had to stop for a couple minutes because a friend of mine fell.


Ran a 6m mile about 30m later (it actually felt better to keep moving than it did to stop and rest).




F*ck running btw. You won't see me doing any of that nonsense until the zombie apocalypse hits..
 
I'm not a particularly good runner but I don't feel like 8 min/miles are difficult. I feel like anyone can run 8 min/miles for 3 miles with a bit of preparation.

I haven't timed myself running 3 miles but I am fairly certain I can hold a 7 min/mi pace and push on the last mile. This is just me talking out of my ass, since I don't have an actual number to give but I start being impressed at being able to hold 6 min/mi pace.
 
Last time I went 3k on an actual run it was around 29:00 but it would take me longer on the treadmill. I can't get over being hyper aware of my pace and the passage of time on a treadmill. Just ruins me. Takes me 32+ to get it done on a treadmill.
 
I have a FAI thing going on now and I can't even run a 5k without limping for days afterwards. My guess based on the limited running I do now is in the 26min range. I can still run 1.5 in under 13 mins which is down from 10:30 last year.

But now that 90% of my cardio is non impact my aerobic base has shot through the roof because I'm not always pushing my run pace at the detriment of my HR.
 
I use to run cross country in high school and my average was around 23 something. I never came close to winning but was never last either. Haven't actually tried in a few years but I have stayed in decent shape so would guess I could probably do it between 25-26.
 
Mid 18's in college. Did a few fun runs in the summer and hit in the 27's.
 
Last time i ran a 5k i did it after sprinting a 1km and finished it in 26 and change iirc. Not bad for a non runner. Cross country people will finish this short of 20 minutes.
 
Think I might get under the 30 min mark, but I admit I'm far from where I ought to be.

At 200+ lbs , at least 20 lbs overweight, I'm basically a single gear runner (the one right above walking).

I'm also heavy enough that running shoes makes a significant difference, and the only ones I own at the moment are worn out to the point where I feel like I'm running on thin, poorly balanced pieces of cardboard. And proper running shoes are ridiculously pricey in my country nowadays (average cost in stores is upwards of 170 USD).
I'm keeping an eye out for cheap knockoffs on Aliexpress...
 
There's a few guys here that regularly go sub 20 without breaking a sweat. Last time I tried, I think it was about 21 mins for me.
 
I got anxious to do something this morning so I went out an ran 3 miles in about 25:30 and I'm shocked. There's something to be said about an aerobic base and it's effects on exercises not directly trained.

Update: I went out and had a try. Ran 5.7 km in 35 min (misjudged the distance a little) with average effort. Had to walk for about a hundred metres in the middle, but that's pretty normal for me atm. Guess that means I run 5 km in about 30.
 
Don't even think I can..

I've got a mate who can run 5km in sub 15 mins.. He doesn't even consider them a challenge.
 
When I was in the Marine Corps I ran a sub 18 minute 3 mile with gas in the tank. Now I'm more of a fat powerlifter than cardio monkey, but I could still run it sub 20.
 
Did it around 22:50 I think when I tried about a year ago. I didn't really train for it, and I was not in great shape, but I am pretty good at pushing myself. I was beat afterwards. My knee is doing good so I'll do another in August next year(we have a huge 5k run in Copenhagen there) and train for it.
 
I was pretty proud to hit 5k in 30 mins the other day. This thread just shit all over my accomplishment.

Don't feel bad. Unless you really train to run 5k, nobody is naturally going to beast it. 20 minutes of hard running is difficult. Most non-fatbodies can probably get to around 25 minutes in the 5k on actual streets.

Running distances and times on the treadmill don't count.
 
I hate running and have barely done any since playing soccer in high school. That said I'd probably do 5k in like 15 or 16 minutes.



Just kidding.

I ran 1km on the track at the gym the other day after lifting and it wasn't as bad as I thought but 5km would have my calves crying tears of shame.

So to answer your question my 5km time is currently about 2.5 days, I'll let you know when I finish.
 
Lol at all these dudes in here admitting they are slow runners. Or can't do it at all.

What is wrong with being honest about not being the best at everything? I do well enough in some areas, but even when I was young I was never a good runner. Both my genetics and other athletic activities that altered my foot strike pretty much ensure that I never would be.
 
I can run 8 laps (2 miles) in a lil over seventeen minutes. At 308 lbs I don't think that's bad

I think (so completely subjective) anyone who runs fairly regularly and doesn't weigh way above his ideal weight* should be able to run 25-to-sub 25 min. And this is by recreational, non amateur/professional standards. 30 min is sort of the limit for the longest possible time you can do it in, and still call it "running".

Anything under 20 min sounds nuts. I'm sure plenty of people can do it, and some might even consider it unspectacular, but I've never been even close to it and I used to streak for months at a time. So sub-20 is athlete territory IMO.


*Fat or otherwise, and isn't old, sick, disabled, a child or a woman, lacking proper shoes or running in difficult terrain/climate.
 
Best ever was 19:30ish at 5'7" and 210# of bro.

We had to run three times a week so you really didn't have a choice. That PR nearly killed me. Don't think I've done one since. I've maybe run four miles in this calendar year.

I don't like long distance running, I don't like the way it makes/made me feel. We used to do a lot of running back in me ol' UFC days. It suck assed, I got no satisfaction from it.. so I don't do it now and likely never will.
Plus long distance running shalt preventuth and diminish gains.. it says this in the book of Bro's, so it is written, so it is true. In Zyzz we trust, Amen.

Sweet stuff. Probably not optimal at all in terms of gains, but if you actually like running it's very rewarding. Once you're somewhat used to jogging daily, and you don't set any particular goals (and you don't weight train or do any other sports that interfere), it's about as demanding as taking a stroll.
 
Now I want to know. I used to run 10 in around 45 about a year ago when I was running regularly, so I'm guessing 25-30 for 5 now(plus DOMS next day or two).
 
Mid 19's...well at least I used to. I'm sure it's in the low 20's now.
