I know all sports have toxic fans. NBA fans were tweeting nasty stuff to Curry's wife. But on the whole I find alot of cool nba fans on /r/nba. You can avoid those negative fans easy.
On the other hand. Every time I pull up mmajunkie, sherdog or /r/mma I just read comment after comment that is extremely hateful and personal. These aren't simple I want to see he/she KO'd comments. I read some really negative and truly dark stuff. Even mundane things like Ronda going shopping has some awful comments throughout the whole thread. You cant avoid it.
In MMA it seems so hard to avoid the negative fans. After awhile I just want to delete all my mma bookmarks and follow golf or something. I love the sport but the overwhelming stuff you got to read in the community is too much. I just cant deal with it.
