Did they write letters and wait on a response then send the picture to newspapers to print out

Dial up wasn't that long ago, and it would piss you off trying to talk shit and someone picks up phone in other room.
 
They called each other out for a fight at the beach, and then the word spread.

Usenet was a big one. Other bulletin board systems. Using a dial up modem and phone line. For text only it was adequate.
 
They struck deals with dictators, flew the whole circus to a remote African country, invited journos from all over the world to come see the fight and report, delayed the fight so that all those journos were there for like a month and then had the fight.

No that's right. He sent pigeons to his upcoming opponents with a photo of his most recent victim attached to it's leg. Tyson was nuts!!
