How did Michael Bisping end up on a pedestal on these forums?

I’ve been lurking since 2010, and throughout the years there always seemed to be a general consensus when it came to Ping. And this is from someone who always enjoyed his fights and antics.

Good fighter, not great
Jack of all trades, master of none
Always fell short in big fights
Basically the ultimate gatekeeper

After Ping KO’d Rockhold to tie the rivalry 1-1.... the consensus still hadn’t changed. Everyone still thought the same of Bisping... only now they added “fluke champ” or “weak champ” when describing him.

He then when on to duck all top 5 middleweight contenders thus confirming everyone’s fluke/weak champ narrative. Arguably loses to by 46 year old Hendo, nearly finished twice. Then his damaged old body gets finished by Georges in a war and KTFO by Gastelum before retirement.

Now when you visit Sherdog, you’d think Bisping was the MW GOAT and viewed as a killer by most. What gives?

Bisping is the MW GOAT currently under USADA.

Had USADA been around in the beginning of Bisping's career his record would be 31-5-4NC.

Fights against Hendo 1, Belfort, Sonnen and Wand would be a NC due to steroids and TRT under USADA.

USADA has established a level playing field and a clean fighter like Bisping had finally become a defending champion.

Prevailed against Hendo in a rematch who still carried his TRT infused KO Power due to years of TRT usage but USADA era Bisping fought against the tyranny of TRT in a Fight of the Night performance and won the fight which is a little bit of justice for clean fighters.

The best clean MW in the UFC.

Idk but I never liked him. Acted like a jerk and he still does as an analyst

I keep trying to mention Anderson Silva before I realize he wasn’t busted too.

MW is dirty

TL;DR

Fuck off buddeh

I used to hate him, but he grew on me. Same thing happened to must of Sherdog. He is a pretty funny guy.

One of the hardest workers. Most likely clean or close to it. Genuine character. Charismatic. H-bomb sympathy.

I agree with much of this, but it's obviously not true that he always fell short in big fights. In the biggest fight of his career, in a title shot he didn't exactly earn, he knocked Luke Rockhold the fuck out. I think him getting a shot was bullshit and his defense against Henderson was bullshit, but that one glorious moment defined his career as above a gatekeeper, despite imo never really being a top five guy at MW.

Without the Rockhold win, he's remembered for being KOed in epic fashion. Now he's remembered for schooling the champ.

Its easy to shit on fighters, but if you think about what these guys do, especially guys like bisping. They deserve so much respect.

I kinda wanna say idiocy. But maybe a failure to look at the big picture is part of why some overlook his glaring flaws as a beltholder. Shit was arguably unethical to have those defenses.

Which is why GSP haters need to stfu about the middleweight belt. He eliminated that blackeye on the division and didn't try to cherrypick opponents to defend and keep the belt.
Bisping is in the runnings for worst champ ever, despite McGregor never defending a fucking belt.

But plenty of people disliked Bisping's antics.

There are people who exaggerate his fighting ability now, though (see the Bisping vs Franklin thread).

Whatever. At least he's not fucking up the title picture anymore

Quite the opposite. Most of Sherdog USED to like him on the level of a poster you interact with on the forum. He used to get tips from us about training partner's opponents and shit. He tried that shit anonymously before the GSP fight, but it was obvious as fuck.
He ruined his good will here on his own.

Always thought he was a total knob, but I enjoyed his fights. He had several really good scraps...plus he ko’d Rockhold.

Trolls putting Ping on a pedestal. What doesn't make sense about that? This place is over 50% trolls making up the population. Make a thread and 95% of the responses are trolls thinking they're so kewl and witty.

I love that you're some kind of human barometric device for measuring the consensus on Sherdog. Ever considered perhaps your perspectives have shifted?

Furthermore, Fighters who retire are viewed more positively as they are no longer "in your face" (In the fighting ranks).

Fighters like Bisping have collected fans after being thrown into 25 ufc fights. a lot of fans have aged with him, myself included. At one stage he gave me the shits. Now I admire his balls and hate the drug cheats who blasted his eye out of his skull .

People change. Perspective changes. Bisping was once a "bad boy" - and then we got Jones smashing his cars into cocain factories, so it all changed.

In summary, try not to obsess over the "consensus" of a forum with no consensus

He gets credit for being clean, but the best win of his career is widely regarded as a fluke. I don’t personally share that sentiment, but to the OP- he gets shit on more than anything.

You don't have to like someone to respect them. See Jon Jones. Can't stand his shenanigans outside the cage (even inside with eye pokes but that's another discussion). But you can't deny what he has accomplished. I don't like Bisping but he's one of the guys who struck me as being his genuine self and, although I don't like his personality, I respect his honesty and he worked hard to get where he is.

Bisping is tough as nails and fought whoever was put in front of him, and always came to fight. Rode that toughness all the way to the MW gold, despite not having the punching power, athleticism, or even the chin of the top end of the division. Still he made it work and collected gold in a stacked division.

Not everyone is a record queen like yourself.

Bisping gets his due respect from people who respect fighters.
