How did Fedor get in the armbar so easily and fast?

Watching some old Pride fights and what surprises me is how little time there is between Fedor getting the takedown and the armbar in some fights it only took him seconds. Was the skill level much different? No modern day ufc fighter gets armbars that easily and it takes them way more time to do so.

His instincts, reaction time, explosiveness, and decisiveness.

He didn't fuck around. He was on kill-mode the second he put his hands on someone.

A lot of fighters are cautious even when they have the upper hand.

Fedor wasn't that kind.

And this sums it up.

Fedor was explosive as hell on the ground, and often did not stop to secure position. He did the same thing during GNP. Witness his first fight with Nog - he thumped his melon while moving. Not something most people do.

It is a wild guess but I think he must have practiced it.

Talent, and the fact that the average submission defense was nowhere close to what it is today. Nowadays everybody fighting on the professional level has a solid knowledge of defensive grappling.

Pretty similarly to Ronda - some lighting fucking quick Judo hips.

If explosiveness is not there, and/or opponents are starting to really pay attention and give no space, it get's way harder to get.

He allowed nog to move around so much and recover guard all the time. Ufc fighters don't do that, they would rather maintain a good Position instead of trying to get a stoppage

I miss the Fedor of old

So ... very .... much

:(

Mad skillz and killer instinct.

He is 4 time gold medalist at world championships in sambo,

6 gold medals at Russian Championships

1 gold medal at european championships

and double bronze medalist in Judo in Russia.

His grappling was one of the best in MMA. I'm not scared to compare it to guys like Werdum, Mir, Nogueira.

Yeah, Fedor was always so dynamic. Of course, with his speed at HW, it makes a certain amount of sense to stay as mobile as possible.

And given that his grappling background and base was Judo/Sambo instead of BJJ, during his grappling competitions, there was not much time to work for a sub.

He was like a beautiful tiger killing the fuck out of everything

he was fighting HW bangers, not BJJ guys
for the most part
