How common is steroid use in MMA?

Gabi Garcia is visibly steroid. Chris Cyborg is known. I guess these women get detected because they show symptoms and if you see some of Holly Holms pictures, she is displaying certain symptoms that female bodybuilders show but I do not wish to get into those.

Besides women, how many men are into this? Can anyone give an estimate and also shed light on how you are coming to that estimate?

Shouldn't be news to anyone, but I believe over half the UFC roster uses or has used. I don't have proof but that's my opinion based on having trained for many years, having trained around users and having briefly used myself 20+ years ago (never in competition).

Gym I train at has one active UFC fighter who is quite possibly the most humble, good sportsman vibe giving athlete I've ever trained around. He's not a big name and doesn't make the big bucks but has been ranked in the top 5. I've had very candid talks about PEDs with another coach (lower level fighter) who spars with him and whom I'm friendly with. He's all but admitted to me what he's used and says he's tried to "help" UFC guy out over the years but says he's always refused, saying it's cheating and is wrong.

This makes me a little less cynical about the sport but I don't believe this guy is the norm. There are just too many performance benefits to using and I think certainly could be the difference between being a champ or fringe top 10.

I know of several that are open about it, now imagine those that aren't. For whatever it's worth to you OP, none of these guys have been caught.

lol

Is there a lot of people on Sherdog who just didn't play sports or follow sports at all growing up?

Once you get to the highest levels of competition almost everyone is going to be using PEDs. It's basically a fact. Every olympic lifter is on steroids, almost to literally all olympians are on PEDs, virtually every NFL player (omitting kickers/punters/some QBs) are on steroids/HGH.

I'd say the majority to vast majority of MMA fighters are using some PED. In the UFC specifically, I'd say the majority are still. People thought and think USADA is some amazing testing org, well it's not. They are actually kind of a joke in some ways and it's not impossible to beat legit testing anyway.

More men than women use steroids too hence the highlight there. Any untested league/organization is just going to be full to the brim with PED use, i.e. submission grappling and BJJ who don't test, some powerlifting orgs, strongman.

It just makes way too much sense to use PEDs, they work and they work fucking well. In a sport like MMA or football you're just taking a fucking beating all the time. So you not only add strength-speed, but the ability to recover at god-tier levels as opposed to maybe being a 34-40 year broken down athlete.

Another example that everyone should know is the MLB. Everyone was using steroids...lol. They worked. Basically all the scams and bullshit supplements and super foods, all those claims that were extreme hyperbole or false...well steroids actually is that. So it makes no sense to NOT take PEDs when there's like a 1% gap between being a 13-17th ranked fighter and being a top 5 guy.

Great point and even UFC fighters that don't currently use came up in smaller leagues that don't test. Doesn't mean everyone was using but just watch any bigger regional show and you will see guys on the card built like f'ing Marius Pudzianowski. To say nothing of the top guys in BJJ.

Who is it? No harm in sharing

We must have different bro-codes. Being gossipy with information other people don’t need know isn't part of it.

The dude said what he said and said enough to get the point across. There’s absolutely no need for you to know more than that.
He said that the ufc fighter refused to cheat which demonstrates the integrity of said athlete.

Gossip is another word for talking shit. What he said doesn't qualify as gossip.

It's up to him whether he wants to share the name, but there is nothing gossipy about the actions of said athlete.

This is common sense. I shouldn't have to explain it.

'That guy refused to cheat because he has integrity.'

'Oh, who?'

JimmyRustled: 'Quit gossiping, bro code'
Yep. You don’t need to know. It serves no purpose other than you being nosy.
