How come there are no openly gay UFC fighters?

Today I was thinking about how all of the open LGBTQ fighters in the UFC are women.

But this shouldn't be the case.

The UFC has a male roster of more than 550 fighters.

Many surveys and academic studies estimate the gay population to be between 8% and 10%.

Statistically speaking it is highly unlikely that there aren't a handful of UFC fighters who are gay.

The question then becomes why are they not open about this?

Present day America is one of the most open and accepting societies in world history when it comes to the LGBTQ community. Being openly gay has never been easier, safer, and more tolerated than it is today.

So we have to ask ourselves is the MMA community at odds with society at large? Even though mainstream society has normalized the LGBTQ lifestyle, has the MMA community remained stuck in the past with it's views regarding gayness? Do gay UFC fighters think they will be maligned and ostracized if they come out?

It is what it is. Or as a great man once said, "What it is... Is what it is. OH YEEEEEEAH!"

I mean, the NFL just got it's first openly homosexual (that actually is on a roster).

Ehhh that’s not how that stat works.

50% of humans (approx) are women yet much less than 50% of the roster are WMMA fighters.

Maybe because it's not even close to 8 to 10%

Your statistic of 8 to 10% only applies to the general population. A select group of 550 fighters would probably have a different % in reality (which could be lower, or even higher for all we know).

While you are right that "being openly gay has never been easier, safer and more tolerated", it still doesn't mean that coming out of the closet is easy, safe and tolerated. This applies not just to UFC, but everywhere else in society. "Easier" doesn't mean its easy - climbing half of Mount Everest is "easier" than climbing the whole thing, but it is still not an easy task.

There is literally no gain for fighters to come out of the closet. It doesn't make them fight any better or worse. And on the flip side, it might even lose them some fans. In such a lose-lose situation, I wouldn't be surprised if there are fighters who chose not to out themselves.

It's actually much closer to 4.5% even though when you take a poll asking Americans what the gay population is they guess 25% which is obviously laughable. People believe what they see on tv and how vocal the small minority is. I don't know what the divide is for male/female percentages though.

Even at 5% you would think there might be a couple of gay guys in the UFC just based on numbers but you are talking pure Alpha males for the most part competing in combat sports so 2.5% (half the total gays) is probably too high.

Sterotypically gay men are less interested in combat sports these days. MIght be some truth to that I don't have any evidence.

Historically I bet if you went to Ancient Greece/Macedonia you would be hard presseed to find a wrestler/pancrateon fighter/boxer who wasn't fucking dudes from time to time.

It wasn't gay to fuck dudes back in those times. Kinda how slavery wasn't illegal back then, different rules and all that.

I think it's a good thing. They have enough mental issues, they don't need to come into the sport with one

This is fighting so the homosexuals will be the women

If it was artistic ice skating the homosexuals would be men
Lol. I don't think you really understand what being gay means.

I guarantee you that there are a ton of gay fighters.

Wait, do you actually think that there aren't any gay dudes in the UFC?

Spoiler alert: there definitely, definitely are.
