How can Conor retire if he has a contract with the UFC?

because if he ever unretires, he's still under that contract. If a fighter retires, that contract essentially gets frozen and unfrozen when they return to competition. It's why guys at the end of their career sign like 8 fight deals, it's so that they don't retire and then try to go fight elsewhere like Frank Shamrock did.

He doesn't have to fulfill the fights on the contract....however he cannot go and fight for another organization.

I have a gut feeling that this is a reaction to the death last week. I think he believes he's serious. But a couple of days from now it will be full steam ahead.

If not it's his life and his choice.
i saw that theory but he also tweet like 24 hours ago that he was training soooo

You can't enforce it plus it has a rollover clause. Essentially if you retire the contract freezes.

hes not retiring now, he just said hes retiring young
young could be 28, 29, 30, 31.....

load of nonsense

As long as he doesn't fight in another promotion, there's nothing they can do.

Do you really think they can just force someone to enter a combat arena? This is 2016, not 270 BC.

This guy's right. Specific performance is not an available remedy in personal service contracts.

The UFC can't force him to fight, all the contract ensures is that he doesn't fight under a different promotion

And that whole champion clause?

It would cost him a lot of money

They aren't slaves. They don't get signing bonuses like in the NFL. So really it's his choice and it won't cost him a cent that he has already earned. I mean he loses a lot in potential revenue but no other real ramifications.

I'm hopeful he will fight again... he has not made THAT much money overall and he seems like he's already blown a chunk of it on cars/custom suits/etc.

you would think that they would have made a bit more of a deal about his real retirement. i call bs

But he can just show up fall and tap, and collect his 10mil show money. He's not retiring.

As someone else stated it may have to do with the death at that show in ireland. The dude retired before the ufc due to seeing brain injuries happen to teammates and has always said get in get out.And then he is at a show in what i have heard was just a normal fight no real savage moment were the ref failed to stop it and the guy dies.Maybe he thought enough is enough.

Or you have the other side he is just creating intrigue and its bs or its real and he failed a test or re did his knee and said fuck it my body isnt up to this

Conor runs the UFC, he can gtfo however he wants.
Bullshit. Since when did the Fertitta brothers become gormless. He ostensibly has all this leverage in the UFC, but
make no mistake, behind the scenes he's doing WAY more listening than talking. His cynosure persona is for the
fans, it's not based on reality.

Some fighters do get signing bonuses. When Randy Couture sued the UFC he claimed he didn't get a signing bonus and then the UFC produced proof showing that they paid him 1mill just to sign.

He's not retiring. Good god
There actually was rumors that he was considering it after the Diaz fight. It could be a publicity stunt but it could also be for a number of other reasons.

The reasons why he'd do this, in no particular order:

1. Made his money, doesn't need to risk his health any more. He just saw a guy die.
2. After actually getting beat up in Rnd.2 of his last fight he realized he really didn't like the part of fighting where he got hurt and realized he wasn't as invincible as thought and it was going to happen again.
3. Scared of having to face Edgar, Aldo, Dos Anjos, ect... and realized he won't be able to back up his trash talk. Realized that his wins over Mendes and Aldo, his only really top notch wins, were possibly going to be the highlight of his career and with the reality that he was going to have to face tougher competition he retired to try and retain some ridiculous GOAT legacy before being fully exposed. Now he can just fall back on the "bigger man" excuse.
4. Realized the LW division isn't going to grant him quick KO's after losing to a gatekeeper and can no longer cut to FW with the IV ban and his extra weight, similar to #2 in that he wants no part of the long grueling fights that comes with being at the top of a division.
5. USADA nailed him.
6. Negotiation tactic, losing to Diaz hurt his stock a ton and now he wants to get back some leverage.
7. Injury, possibly his knee, and he doesn't want to "pull out" of his fight. He comes back in a year or two with a fixed knee and a more well rounded skillset.
8. Drugs and partying are more important to him or he can't handle the Hollywood lifestyle and wants get away from the drugs and partying.
