How big is Aljamain Sterling for his weightclass?

Fooking Uber Lanklets ruining the sport ITellz yeah

They both make weight.

PS "weight bully" and similar sentiments is the dumbest trend on sherdog in years. And that's saying something. Calling for changes to "systemic massive weight cuts" is not dumb; calling out individual fighters for doing what everyone does (and/or for failing the "look" test) is dumb. Beyond dumb. Excessively dumb. Mind-numbingly dumb. Embarrassingly dumb.

And it's always a popularity contest.

Holloway isnt a weight bully because he's a fan favorite. But Conor who was the smaller man between them was.

Jones was a weight bully, but Gus wasn't.

jamaican genetics. low body fat. he can cut alot of water.

he used to not be so huge. he put on alot of size between the first and second Yan fight.

maybe the neck injury was holding him back? maybe another reason?
Oh yea it did. Look, his win over Yan was boring but he controlled Yan like he was a little boy. As long as it works Sterling will probably keep doing it.

Am I the only one that thinks this dude is huge for the 135lbs division, he looked huge next to Petr Yan and it showed on the ground.

He is 5´7´´ or 5´8´´ and I know there are some other dudes tallers in that division like Cory Sandhagen or Sean O´malley but they look pretty skinny next to Aljo, this dude looks huge I´m surprised he can even make 135lbs

He's a bantamweight who has never missed weight. That's how big he is.

This should be stickied.

If he's too big but still makes weight, then the others are a little small and should bulk up.

In case anyone cares.

Sterling hasn't fought in California since they started publishing fight night weights. So we DON'T know how much he gains between weigh-in and fight time.

Back when I tracked these things (pre-COVID), the average weight cut across UFC events in California was 10%. California started punishing fighters above 14.7% (source).

Here's the last event in Cali. So we DO know that the 4 BW's in that event gained 12%, 12%, 14% and 14%. All 4 of these fighters are well above average, and half of them are getting mighty close to "too high" (as per California rules).

So riddle me this; why might "weight bully" whiners bitch about some fighters, but not about Blackshear, Zalal, Cruz and Vera? Answer: because they are emotional bitches who don't rationally use available facts to come to reasonable conclusions.

Hes kinda big for division but you have taller guys like Cory. Think Sterlings best attribute is his physical strength. Once he has you on ground its hard to get his hands off you. Especially once he gets your back.

Ultimately without fight-day weight data from California, everything is just speculation. It should be the standard for all commissions to log and clear fight day weights, fairly ridiculous that CSAC is doing this while NSAC does not.

Its also important to recognize 10lbs gaps between classes for humans that size is a big jump

For reference, current NCAA classes in this range have 8lbs gaps:

125lbs
133lbs
141lbs
149lbs
157lbs

If the UFC had similar 8lbs classes I could see Aljo competing at 141lbs, but he would be undersized fighting modern featherweights. The most egregious gap in the sport right now is 155lbs-170lbs. Its talent rich with nearly 200 fighters in roster depth and a completely ridiculous gap.

Aljo's one of the bigger Bantamweights but I don't think he's huge, I think he'd be on the smaller side vs Featherweights like Ilia, Ortega, Korean Zombie, Kattar, Emmett, Holloway etc. He wasn't THAT much bigger than Petr Yan and Umar Nurmagomedov is every bit as big as Aljo.

They are the same height. It Aljo’s hair style that makes him look 5’10 ish

Aljo looks about a half an inch taller, is a little more muscular, a little broader in the shoulders and chest and has a longer reach. Yan isn't a small BW but he's not the biggest either. Sterling is one of the bigger BWs but nothing egregious, pretty clearly smaller than Aldo was, Chito and Umar are big too.

Agreed!

Yan is average.

Chito and Umar are big too.

I'm pretty sure that he informed/bragged about his weight years, ago with photo of digital scale showing the weight IIRC.

Being somewhere around 160 near the fight, which would make him pretty damn massive. I may remember it wrong, though.

One would have to search his Instagram, from like 3 years ago, or more, don't remember.

Just for informational purposes...

Because rjmbrd is spot on.

No surprise, Cruz isn't tiny either and Andrade is shredded to the kills. Weight isn't the soul criteria for size in my opinion, but it's helpful.
