Lets say that Josh Barnett vs Fedor Emelianenko actually happened in august 2009 because it was cancelled due to Josh got caught on steroids and they went bankrupt. Could they execute more events after that and become an american version of Pride with that ring?

The first fightcard back in 2008 was like a dream, back then Affliction had the best HW outside of UFC including two ex UFC champions Tim Sylvia and Andrei Arlovski.

I hope one day it will come this kind of fightcard again but i guess UFC can surpass.

People place the blame of Affliction's demise on Barnett but truth is they weren't going to last much longer barring some miracle. They absolutely bled money and if one fight falling through buries your promotion then you likely weren't destined for any kind of longevity.

I doubt they could have done any more than they did. They ran out of money or were unwilling to spend any more money or find someone with deeper pockets that could help with cash flow and build on what they started. I'd think they would have had to get TV outside of PPV for some added visibility. Maybe partner up with another organization or buy them out in order to have some more affordable talent . I know some of the Affliction management also worked for Strikeforce at the time.

A business partner that could have helped with all of that never arrived. I thought it was a bit odd because MMA was still hot at the time. No money marks to be found or they simply gave up.

I'd sooner have seen Gary Shaw last longer with EliteXC than Affliction Entertainment.

Affliction: Trilogy was pretty much expected to be the last show anyway. I remember Tom Atencio was on a local radio show promoting the event and he didn’t seem confident that It would keep going. All Barnett did was kill the last card but it wouldn’t have made the return to keep the investors.

I did love Afflictions presentation. The ring was class. The events looked great and the fights were awesome. It just wasn’t to be.

They were gonna shut down anyway after the third event sadly. Affliction was a fun and cool time in the sport. I miss the era of rival orgs popping up out of nowhere, throwing big money around and signing guys, having some big shows.. of course they all failed, but it made for an interesting period in the sport.

Speaking of Affliction, anyone else remember when Attencio fought on the same show as Gilbert Yvel vs Pedro Rizzo? That Yvel KO was one of the most brutal ever, horrible stoppage.

If they didn't go under on that show, they would have gone under 1 or 2 or 3 shows later. Their business model was insane. Was never going to last.

This. I thought affliction was awesome, I went to both events, but they would never have lasted

That's true. Let's say Affliction was on life support and Barnett puled the plug.

They'd be partially owned by the president of the United states.........theyd have huge success..........unless they held shows in "shithole" countries.

It was horribly run behind the scenes. Fans were lured in by the mercenary free agents taking big fight checks the company could no way continue doing long term.

Just like Strikeforce the better fighters would have been picked off by the UFC once Afflictions fighter pay dried up.

Affliction as a t-shirt brand also died a slow death. All those full print skulls / snakes mma shirts had a pretty short shelf life. Only the most hardcore of the douche bros still wear them, along with their backwards caps.

Barnett wasn't the only reason Affliction failed, but he screwed us out of a very important generational HW bout..... I never forgave.

Cant wait for UFC Haiti!

Affliction was a microcosm of Socialist utopia. Gibs for everybody. Gibs, gibs, gibs, gibs, gibs, and then collapse. It would have happened with or without Josh Barnett.

I'd put a lot of them dying as a clothing brand going the way it did because of the Reebok UFC deal.

Just as an example do you see much SilverStar, Sprawl, or Clinch Gear stuff around anymore either?

The only things that seem to have made it out alive of the Reebok deal are American Fighter cause Rich Franklin is the owner and TapouT cause WWE picked them up.
