Horror News & Discussion Redux

I watched and really enjoyed Hush. Its netflix exclusive. I suggest getting your mood and room set nice and dark and quiet to fully enjoy this one. The sound design is what the whole movie rides on.

Green Room was dope. Unfortunately I was like one of 5 people in the theatre watching it.

I loved Blue Ruin, but it doest strike me at all as a horror. Definitely suspense imo.

I agree Blue Ruin is more of a suspense thriller. Looking forward to seeing The Green Room.

Green Room getting amazing reviews. Prob will wait for it to hit the internet, but happy to see everyone loving it

I celebrated Alien Day last Tuesday by scoring a Frightrags super limited design release. They only made 426 of these in total.

I also sprung for the Lootcrate 30 year anniversary Alien Day limited edition. It ships sometime this month.

I also watched Aliens on Blu ray for the first time and it did not disappoint.

Today I decided to watch Prometheus for the first time since seeing it in on it's release. I really enjoyed it the first time I saw it and have been afraid of disliking it on a revisit but that wasn't the case at all. It's characters could have been fleshed out more and made more likable but the ambitious nature of the movie fills the 2 hour run time in a way that would make that difficult. It's not a perfect film but it's a fine sci-fi/horror entry and I hope that Covenant is awesome but if it's at least on par with Prometheus I will be fine with that.

Some of the better horror I've seen recently.

- He Never Died: More slow burn than gore. The fact that it starred Henry Rollins probably added a bit to it for me. Nice twist at the end (and not an M. Night Shitty type of twist)
- Bloodlands was interesting and well made.
- Let Us Prey: somewhat predictable but well made and it has Pollyanna Macintosh
- Open Grave: Sharlto Copely. Good story, well made. More suspense than horror but a nice little movie.
- Would You Rather: Jeffrey Combs being his usual awesome self. Good cast except for Sasha Grey. Holy shit that woman cannot act.
- A Girl Walks Home At Night reminded me of Let the Right One In.
- Final Kill was abysmal. Don't waste your time.
- It Follows was better than I expected. I've seen the praise for it on here and tried not to get my hopes up but it delivered.
- I Spit on Your Grave 1, 2 and 3. 1 and 3 were well done for the type of movie. 2 was kinda dumb but some good kills. 3 was probably the best of the bunch as it went in some new directions and actually added to the earlier movies (rare in a sequel, let alone a horror sequel)

Lovely Molly 5.5/10

LMLPic4.jpg

Molly is a newly wed. Her and her husband decide to move into the house she and her sister grew up in and thats when things go down the pisser. This is one of those flicks where our lead is either going mad, getting possessed, or a supernatural is doing it all and we are supposed to figure it all out.

First half of this movie is shown in a style that I love. Subtlety, no cheese, no comedy, just a gradual increase in horror. You got the loud noises at night, shit you cant see, real fear out of our actors, then the bizarre video images come into play. 30 min in, I am sold. I love this. But...Id like at least one of my questions answered at this point. Instead, more questions keep coming up. For instance, if you watch the trailer of this, youll see that Molly uses a camera to record whats happening to her. Common sense dictates that shes doing this for proof. Now, I dont need to hear that explanation, but after watching it, I dont know why it was there! It does get used to expose a twist, but the twist thats exposed I dont give one shred of shit about. I want to know whats happening to Molly!

There is a lot of creepy sounds and imagery in this. It works, but when anyone watches a security footage of some oddball shit happening to Molly, Id like to know why it furthers the plot. Bizarre is fine, but without giving away specifics, there are too many bizarre things that happen to Molly and even more bizarre shit that Molly does. Too many questions and past half way through, I changed this movies genre from horror to shock. I was merely just watching to see what gross shit Molly will do next.

When it comes to new horrors, Ive seen some great fucking ideas. Ive seen some great new spins on old types of horrors too. But god damn, these new horrors, most of them just cant get it together. The style of which theyre filmed is just about always flawed. There is too much of the directors touch or too much little distractions that just get in the way of the horror.

-too much artsy input "Starry Eyes"
-too much found footage elements we already know "Willow Creek, Taking of Deborah Logan"
-doesnt know what it is "Krampus, The Guest, ginger snaps"
-too much bizarre "Lovely Molly, Babdook"

These arent bad movies, well Krampus is, but they are forgettable. I had both lists in front of me to type the titles just now. I know there are more, but like I said, theyre forgettable.

It Follows is bizarre and even has plot holes, but god damn, it was done just right. The worst part is that its bizarre, BUT thats where the horror is centered. We dont know what the fuck it is or why it does what it does. Thats scary not understanding it.

It's just you're opinion and mine but you're off on "The Guest" . That shit's already made midnight movie status in my area. The local art house movie added it last summer. That's pretty much record time in my book. That might be one of the better indie movies I've seen in a minute. Well paced, decently acted, with sharp dialogue. Not sure if it's really horror though. Almost an action/ suspense movie

You thought Starry Eyes was too artsy? You should check out Anti Christ :D

Thought the Guest knew exactly what it was. An 80s styled thriller.

Do agree Krampus was absolute shit

Buzzfeed.com did another great year line up list of horrors you may had missed in 2015.

https://www.buzzfeed.com/louispeitzman/best-horror-films-2015?utm_term=.rv0zyVAJRy#.edWrVd9XxV

Their list of 2014's list is where I watched most of the years hits. Couldnt find A Girl Walks Home At Night any fucking where.
Wooo the rare couple of horrors I haven't seen between these two. But is Maggie starring Ahnuld really that good? lol

Happy to see that list giving The Final Girls love. One of my favorite movies from last year.

Actually a decent amount of little gems I enjoyed on there. Spring was unique and very good, What We Do In Shadows is fucking hilarious, Deathgasm was fun, Creep was creepy, Bone Tomahawk was amazing, Bloodsucking Bastards was pretty fun.

I am speaking specifically with horror. Big Bad Wolves is another movie in buzzfeed.com's list of 2014 that isnt a horror, but god damn is it a good story. By the time you get to the very ending, Id have to be forced to call it a horror because of the monster that comes to light. The Guest is a thriller, but I cant get behind it fully because I am simply just not afraid of the villain. He doesnt have to be visually intimidating, but perhaps he shouldve taken a page out of Hans Gruber's book. The Guest felt like a teenager movie.

I quoted Ben and re-visited The Guest in it.

Maggie is just a sad movie. Its horror cuz...where else is it gonna go.

I havent seen The Final Girls and I hesitate. The synopsis reminds me of Scream. Scream I loved as a teenager. Today? Not so much.

Can't judge a film by the synopsis. Its nothing like Scream.

EDIT wait I just realized you said you don't like Scream?!?!

That movie will never not be brilliant

OK I can relate to that. I guess on the flip I'd say that David aka the guest wasn't intended to be creepy. The character was for the most part a guy who meant well but is hardwired to kill at the drop of a hat. Part of what I liked about it was Dan Stevens performance. You could see David shift in and out of sociopath mode while everyone else was clueless to how dangerous he was
