Horror News & Discussion Redux

I'm not the biggest F13th fan but I've always liked Part 6 a lot so I wasted some $ on this figure.

Curious if anyone has seen this? It's a well done mumblecore werewolf flick with good performances & a killer practical effects transformation scene that calls back to the OG, An American Werewolf in London. It doesn't fuck around and gets right to the point by immediately presenting the stakes, working towards the fun final climactic stand-off from there. Sure, it has some holes, but I really enjoyed it.

I have not but I remember someone here has. Think it was given some praise.

I was curious about it but assumed it was bad as most Werewolf films usually are.

I'll check it out and report back.

We should really bring our talents together and make the ultimate horror film, imo.

I've been getting into low-budget independent horror flicks that give nods to the tropes of their antecedents, but gives those tropes fresh little twists, so Late Phases is one that hit the spot right. We Are Still Here is another that would fall under this category for me.

The Visit is another that attempted to do this as well, albeit with a more recent fad in found footage thrillers, but unfortunately Shyamalan got too caught up in his self-awareness and was super trigger happy with all the misdirections and red herrings. Made the film feel like a slog despite its 90min runtime.

I'd actually be interested in making a mumblecore horror flick kinda like the ones I've been watching recently. It would be a fun project at the very least, but I don't think I'm nearly as well-versed in horror cinema as most people.

What is mumblecore?

What is mumblecore?
It's a terrible term for a sub-genre of independent films.
...a form of dramatic comedy, usually made by Americans in their 20s and 30s, who take a do-it-yourself approach to filmmaking. These are people who grew up loving and watching movies, but are tired of the Hollywood clichés. Most of the films are independent productions and usually are “slice of life” features. The characters are just average people – slackers in most cases – who are struggling with day-to-day obstacles like paying their bills and dealing with their friends, family and significant others.

Mumblecore has a few focuses; first is that they aim to tell small human stories about unique characters with an emphasis on realism. In order to achieve that realism, they need natural dialogue; in some cases, then, the dialogue is ad-libbed. At times, there is so much improvisation that the actors get writing credits.

Just got done watching Martyrs (2008)

Ugh...

Enjoyed it and disliked it...

I recommend it because it put me in a certain mood but for sure I won't be re watching it anytime soon.
