First LIGHTS OUT Trailer Makes You More Afraid of the Dark

Lights-Out-Teresa-Palmer-Dragonlord.jpg

Director James Wan brings his brand of horror back to the big screen this summer with The Conjuring 2, but he’s also got more scares up his sleeve as the producer of a new, original horror story called Lights Out.

Rebecca (Teresa Palmer of Triple 9) thinks she escaped her childhood fears when she left home. But now when she comes back, it’s clear that what scared her as a child is still lurking in her mother’s house, and it’s scaring the hell out of her little brother Martin. Not that the dark wasn’t already scary before, but this looks to make it even more terrifying.

That creepy, shadowy woman is unnerving enough, but potentially even more horrifying is that fact that Rebecca’s mother, played by Maria Bello, seems to be complicit in her haunting the house. James Wan is only producing this film with David F. Sandberg making his feature directorial debut, based on his own short film. Lights Out brings the darkness to theaters on July 22.

2nd Trailer for LIGHTS OUT Explores a Dark Family Curse

Lights-Out-Teresa-Palmer-062416-Dragonlord.jpg

Some of the best horror movies prey on out most basic and primal fears. We humans don’t see very well in the dark, of course, which means that even the most innocuous experiences at nocturne can be tinged with a feeling of unease.

Lights Out, produced by creepy pasta maestro James Wan, uses those fears to frightening effect. Director David Sandberg adapts his own 2013 short film of the same name, which focuses on a woman who is haunted by a thing in the darkness of her home — a thing which only reveals itself when the lights are off. So basically, you’ll never sleep with the lights off again after this, if you sleep at all.

The new trailer reveals a few new spooky scenes, and a few new looks at Diana, the thing under the bed (so to speak). The film stars Teresa Palmer, Maria Bello, Gabriel Batemen and Charlotta Losten. Lights Out premieres Friday, July 22nd.

I'm not feeling it. Something about it just turns me off. I loved the Conjuring so I hope this director doesn't disappoint.

James 'Jumpscare' Wan can go fuck himself, that hack hasn't made a good movie since the first Saw a zillion years ago.

I wish a director would come along with a new horror movie that really pushes the genre forward into new territory, like Kubrick did with The Shining, or Verbinski did with The Ring.

I swear to god every 'new' horror movie that comes out, seems like the same one I've seen 27,648 times over & over in the last buncha years. The genre as a whole is in a major slump.

It's all influenced by Japanese/Korean style horror from the late 90s/early 00s.

I personally like the found footage horror better than the jumpscare style, but compared to so much other bad Horror out there in the West, James is actually creating some captivating stuff.

dosent even look remotely scary, its too bad all these idiots copied the ring and went the black haired women with broken legs route when it came to scaring ppl. The ring was original this shit is laughable. Its gotten to the point where if I find a well in the woods I'll bathe in it recreationally just to get the speed stick scent out of my armpit hair. Im combing my pit hair just like scary movie 3 at this point. This shit aint scary give us some real scares.

The film is directed by David F. Sandberg, and is based on Sandberg's 2013 award-winning short film of the same name.

Im looking forward to this, though wish it was closer to Halloween

Early reviews are great.

Guess that's another Wan involved film I'm going to see in 2 months.

I was a bit surprised to see so many ‘great’ reviews for the film. It is scary at times when they manage to catch you off guard but after seeing better horror done not too long ago I couldn’t give this one a glowing endorsement. The acting from the main characters are good, the film makes use of its limited budget and does what it can to earn it’s scares, and they also do a great job of building tension and creating an uneasy feeling of dredd which keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout. With that said, Lights Out is ultimately a short, jump scare horror trope filled, low budget film that plays it by the numbers. You won’t miss out on anything by waiting for this movie to come out on Redbox and going to see something else. If the film was 20 minutes longer it could have left an impression, instead this film will be remember as well as Annabelle…good thing they are coming out with Annabelle 2…

Saw it tonight.

7/10

It wasn't really scary, just loud sound jump scares after the other. I was reading reviews about the topic of mental illness being a big part of the film, definitely.

Kept me entertained so it is what it is.

Critics' Reviews for LIGHTS OUT

Rotten Tomatoes: 80% Approval Rating (63 out of 78 critics like it)

Critics Consensus: Lights Out makes skillful use of sturdy genre tropes -- and some terrific performances -- for an unsettling, fright-filled experience that delivers superior chills without skimping on story.

Entertainment Weekly - Like the most enjoyable horror movies, Lights Out is almost a physical experience, carrying viewers from stress and terror to even some tension-breaking hilarity. B-

New York Daily News - Unsettling enough to make you think twice about what might be in the room with you when the lights go out. 4/5

Newark Star-Ledger - A small, pitch-black treat, "Lights Out" takes a common childhood terror and uses it to spin a horror story with a new kind of ghost and some familiar, but still effective shocks. 3/4

James Berardinelli - Unfortunately, the film stumbles, offering too few legitimate scares and displaying an overreliance on traditional horror movie clichés. 2/4

Washington Post - "Lights Out" deserves to be considered in the company of such recent horror standouts as "It Follows," "The Babadook," "Goodnight Mommy" and "The Witch." 3.5/4

Richard Roeper - Even the most cynical, jaded, seen-it-all-before critic cannot deny certain visceral reactions to a film. Lights Out gave me the chills. 4/4

Lights Out: 3/10

Uhh, not much to say - very generic, plot holes, and just bad overall movie.

It got 3 out of 10 because Teresa Palmer looks good in it (1 for a few good scared and 2 for Teresa looking particularly spectacular (I did not even know it was her at first)).
