US wrestling medals are no longer the universal acknowledgements of the proverbial "proof that's in the pudding"
Like they used to be.
Wrestlers accolades have given us cross over fighters whose actual skill level or talents can range anywhere from DC to Bo. From Hendo to Cejudo.
It suggests that you were the shit, at one point, in pure wrestling, on that specific occasion when you won big on the night.
All it proves about your long term potential in MMA is that you've shown to be capable of committing to getting to the elite level of a hard sport before, and maybe can do it again.
Frank Shamrock tapped out gold medalist wrestler Kevin Jackson in the 90s in 16 seconds.
This was the fastest submission win in a UFC title fight for nearly 20 years. You know who broke his record, and still holds it til this day?
Ronda, with a 14 second sub win over a cartwheeling Cat Zingano. Conor still has the record for fastest KO in a title fight. I know that the thought of those 2 holding those records might irk a lot of the hardcore fans lol
While true, Kevin Jackson shouldn't be compared to this Latina wrestler. Jackson was a legit gold medal Olympian in men's wrestling, which means something. And he got submitted (not outwrestled) by one of the best submission artist of the 1990s.
This goes to show that women's wrestling is a joke, at least the level of wresling this "world champion" competed in. Kevin Jackson would've destroy Frank in pure wrestling. He was also undefeated in MMA (then NHB) before facing Shamrock, who also tapped out Olympian Hendo in submission wrestling.
I tihnk that loss along with Bohlander (also from the Lion's Den) must have embarrassed Jackson so much that he quit the UFC. Too bad, as he had some real potential.
Pan American championships literally mean absolutely nothing … medaling at pan and / qualifying for worlds means absolutely nothing if the qualifying tournament ( pan ams in this case ) has no competition besides United States and Cuba… literally ever other country is terrible at wrestling in pan ams … not only is who you’re saying not a world champion she’s not close to world level ..
