Calm, composed, confident, respectful and determined. None of this 'trash talking' and disrespecting opponents. This is who kids in martial arts should look up to, not the disrespectful trash talkers that brag about money.

Thoughts?

She's the female version of Dan Henderson.

She is a good spokeswoman for the sport, and seems more calm cool and collected than Ronda who was super intense and it cant be good to be like that all the time. Too much pressure.

And here is the antithesis of a martial artist.

I agree. But, some fans become enamored with the glitz. I think there should be a balance between only training your ass off and having a personal life.

One lots

One loss, many devastating victories, Olympic judo medalist.

I was basing that on the OP.

Even losing to Holly Ronda is still a good fighter.

naw, dan wasn't afraid to bust out an excuse, trash fighters, and as well not prepare properly out of pride and underestimating his opponent

This exactly why I think fighters fall off in their 30's. They spent their entire 20's training like savages and when they get into their 30's they want a personal life. Family, travel, experience new things. I'm a full believer that if you continue to train in your 30's/early 40's like a savage you can compete at a high level into your 40's. I've met military guys that are 42, 45 that you would swear are 28 or 30.

While I agree that Holm is a great role model, I do not agree on your definition of a "martial artist."

A martial artist is basically someone who is trained in the art of fighting, whether it'd be Karate, or kickboxing, boxing, wrestling, Jiu Jitsu, etc. And the goal in fighting is to defeat your opponent.

Mike Tyson is no more or less a martial artist than, say, Chuck Norris.

you mean a boxer ? yeah you're right

Well, she is a boxer/kickboxer. She is training her wrestling and Jui Jitsu...she is learning more than one discipline.

Martial arts is a lot more than just fighting, though. I remember being a little 5 year old in a hall learning karate. We were taught a lot more than just how to defend ourselves. We were given life lessons in there.

She's a mixed martial artist, whereas someone like Mike Tyson would be a martial artist in boxing.

Well said brah.

Boxers, for example, are taught more than just boxing techniques. If you ever watch Mike Tyson's documentary, his coaches emphasizes on mental disciplines, hard work, determination, and so on.

I grew up learning Karate and Kung Fu, so I totally get that Hollywood has bastardized the image of a "martial art."

A martial art is an art of fighting. Martial arts could range from Karate, to boxing, to wrestling, to Jiu Jitsu, to Capoeira, etc.

A martial art is not an art of fighting that is exclusively from East Asia.

I'm rooting for Miesha, but I do really like the way Holly conducts herself and will be happy with Holly as champ.

Was really impressed with her interview after the open workouts where they kept trying to get her to talk about a fight with Ronda and she wouldn't budge.
