What Trump should have said was something along the lines of,

I was sorry to hear that Mrs Clinton was taken ill this morning. While we disagree on many political issues, on a personal level I sincerely hope her health problems are not as serious as they first appear. And I wish her a speedy recovery.

This means Trump cannot be accused of taking cheap shots, while planting the seeds of doubt regarding Hilary's health in the minds of voters. This is Politics 101, and I find it astonishing that they keep dropping the ball while playing in the fucking Super Bowl.

I agree with your prescription for how Trump should handle the situation. After the past 48 hours Trump only has to project some quotient of gained-maturity and he'll move the polls three of four points in his direction. That said, I'm not sure you can fault him for saying he doesn't know anything about it only moments after the episode. That's actually a step in the right direction for him.
