Is there any scientific explanation behind when you get hot in certain sports.

For example, today i was playing 3 on 3 pick up basketball at the park, and at one time, i made eight 3 pointers in a row, it felt like i was throwing golf ball into the ocean.

3 threes in a row made you feel on fire? You need to raise your standards. I play in leagues to this day and had a pickup game about a month ago where i hit 9 threes in a row(yes i count).

thought he said 3 threes in a row, my bad.

Shooting is all about mechanics, and the hardest thing to do in-game is zone out and just let your mechanics take over. When you make a few in a row in-game you tend to instantly acquire a self-confidence that allows you to tune out everything else and execute your shooting mechanics unfettered by self-doubt or distraction. You just let your muscle memory take over.

How does being in the zone work? Well, how does the Sun rise? How does the wind blow? How does a heart beat? Even the wisest do not know.

I see, it was weird cuz after the 3rd shot, I was demanding the ball lol

It was like as if I knew for sure I wasn't gonna miss at all

It's a great feeling. Everything becomes so simple. Tony Robbins writes about it in one of his books I was skimming through, "Awaken The Giant Within" I think it was but don't quote me on that. A lot of the shit he writes about is pretty out there and requires a leap of faith but there's some scientific basis behind some of it and that particular section about being in "the zone" stood out to me.

A few studies have been done and the scientists have always concluded that there's no such thing as "the zone". The way I interpret that is - they can't figure it out. I've played bball for many years, now doing BJJ and I know there's definitely a zone you can enter where your mind quiets down and you're just in this seamless, spontaneous flow. I believe constant meditation as well as practice in a certain task makes this state easier to access. There's a great article written about it here - http://www.brainpickings.org/index.php/2014/04/21/trying-not-to-try-slingerland/

the one true explains "The Zone" (vid gets a little strange at 1:30 lol).

anybody who plays basketball at any level lives for The Zone. the only one who would deny this, is the one who has never been so fortunate as to enter The Zone, and become privy to its power. you cannot find The Zone by actively seeking it, rather The Zone finds you. it comes without warning, without warrant, of its own volition. it's the single greatest feeling a man can experience in this life, greater than sex, greater than drugs, greater than plunder and conquest, greater than the discovery of new ideas or treasure, greater still than the birth of your first-born child.

the certainty that when the ball gets in my hands - my hands... not anybody else's, for The Zone has chosen me - not only am i shooting the ball without hesitation, without fear, without a second-thought ... but it's as good as in before the release, as if it has been ordained by a higher power, be it 4 or 40 feet away, be it square or off-balance. a basket. a bucket. a forgone conclusion. your teammates will ooh and ahh, eventually you'll win over even your staunchest opponents, who will have no choice but to concede to The Zone's presence... but The Zone is a fleeting moment, a fickle beast, a bittersweet gift, for the instant you become aware of your own zone, is the instant The Zone leaves you. not gradually nor gently, but rather quite roughly, quite abruptly, on a dime - an instant regression, a deep regret over the tantalizing paradox - simply becoming aware, aware of your own zone.

wow what a writeup, this is SPOT on.

Compare this to faust waxing philosophically about Tony Robbins' gigantism a few posts up, my god what a night and day difference in analysis.
