It may not have been his fault. If he was on a course and his staff were brutal and incompetent, it's possible he was put in a position where his gear was wet and they pushed on. In that case he would have grounds to deny orders and risk failing the course. I am not overly cold sensitive. I live in the forth hottest state but spend a lot of time in cold places. It does appear that genetics does have some to do with temperature tolerance. I actually do better in a colder climate, I just happen to live in a very hot one.

People can become acclimated and people can learn to prepare for adverse conditions. It still does not convince me that some groups and a physical advantage in different climates.

I have worked outside for hours in temperatures around -40 C (-49 F) with some black labourers (most born in Africa) and the dudes were fine. It still sucks, but you just have to dress for the weather/job. I would say the African born ones complain about it a bit more than Canadian born workers, but they complain about the heat more as well so it might just be cultural to bitch about weather.

The human body never really gets used to those temperatures; this guy claimed it was -30 C when he got his injury. I have never heard of a non-freezing cold injury though, is it just hypothermia? I'm surprised I haven't heard of it despite living and working in some of the world's coldest temperatures (Northern Alberta).

Well, if true, that is pretty retarded. I don't see how anyone, regardless of race, can avoid frostbite setting in very quickly at those temperatures. For that reason it sounds hard to believe.

People can call you racist for almost anything it seems. When I worked for big pharma there would be people that threw a fit outside the company because genetics groups predisposes some to have a greater chance of getting certain ailments.

When working in the field in the Southwest it seemed that one group suffered fewer instances of heat stroke. We did do things to reduce it by always wearing hats and light colored long sleeves. No matter what anyone wants to say some groups had fewer incidents of heat stroke.

When it gets mentioned people who never spend three or more days at a time exposed to the elements will tell you your making it up or racist. When you mention getting called racist about then people will come along and lie out there ass like you just did. It seems people love to be experts about things they have never experienced.

Where in the article does it say they weren't allowed to use gloves? I smell bullshit.

As somebody who has personally received a "body temperature injury" I can tell you that prolonged effects from it are utter bullshit. I spent an entire 6 months in the high arctic after the fact, and not only was my body fine, it acclimated and I became more comfortable as time went on.

The only permanent damage you can get from cold weather injuries is from frost bite. Skin becomes very easily irritated in cold weather after suffering from this.
