I am getting mad when people say that if a heavyweight fights Middleweight,Light Heavyweight fighter he will easily win because of his size.Sure the heavyweight will have more mass and more power but have you ever thought that weight divisions don't only exist because of that reason but also because the heavyweight will get tired quickly compared to LH and MW who will have way more stamina and endurance therefore its unfair to put them in a fight together?

What I beleive will happen if we start seeing these kind of matches in the UFC is the following.
1)The heavyweight knocks out/make him submit the other fighter from the first round
2)The LH/MW have more speed they will try to move around a lot so the HW will get tired and gas out and than knock him out make him submit,

Different plans of course

Heavyweight Pros=punching power, Cons= slower poor stamina

MW/LH Pros=Stamina,speed,Cons=less power

Depending on the fighters I believe that LH/MW might win most of the times

It really depends on who are the two fighters.

It's because of the size advantage. To assume a HW will gas is....just wrong. These are not rumbling cave men. Their pro athletes that train their butts off. Nelson is not the whole HW division in terms of stamina. Would you really wanna see Cain vs GSP? I refuse to say Jones, as he's an enigma. He's a HW wrapped in a WW body.

Some MWs are in shape around 220lbs. I could see them being competitive with some decent HWs. Cormier said Luke spars with him and Cain a lot. Those are two top HWs so yeah i can see guys like Rockhold/Sonnen/Weidman/Anderson/Machida/Jones/Mousasi/etc. all being able to hang with most HWs....not beat them but hang. Some HWs are literally only 10lbs heavier than most LHWs and some MWs are in shape well over 200lbs.so...

Size usually matters more when it's like featherweight vs lightweight because the extra weight is usually solid muscle.

When it's lhw vs hw. Most of the time the HW is just fatter.

I think it a numbers game. Size, Power, and Reach is a huge advantage. You might have more skill but I will just step on you. Look at the way Jones just throws people around.

I believe thats why we have weight classes to begin with.

On the street a trained small fighter will probably fuck up most larger people. Just not another somewhat trained fighter.

what is this thread all about :))? want an answer: PRIDE openweight tournaments. There are more parameters taken into account. Your approach is too simple.

top 5 HW > top5 LHW/MW
borderline top 20 HW < top5 LHW/MW

It depends on the fighter...
Wandy wrecked Fujita, then got brutally knocked out by cro cop.
Fedor brutally beat down Semmy who has ridiculous weight advantage.
Rumble almost knock out Arlovski.
Sergei ate Ninja the fat MW for dinner.
Minowaman submit the low level HW but got brutally knocked out by others...

And no, it has nothing to do with stamina or gassing.

Weight divisions do NOT exist to protect the heavier fighters.

Cain Velasquez would legit murder GSP, outweighed by 50+ pounds, once he took GSP down, there's no getting back up.

Christ my sides were obliterated.

It's up to each fighter individually.

In MMA, it's never a given that fighter X will beat fighter Y. In that sense, yes, some MW/LHW can beat some HW.

On a regular basis or more often than not? Not even close. Not in the top 10 at least. The gasp is huge enough that those fighters chose to cut weight to an inferior weight class. It should tell you enough.

I think if you made a list of all the smaller fighters that beat bigger guys (who are legit guys and not freakshow like zulu)

And I made a list of bigger guys beating smaller guys. My list would be longer than yours.

My point being is that size does matter. A lot of people like to say "no it doesn't look at this fight". But that's still isn't the majority. No one ever points out the big guy dominating the small guy.

well said ts, I hate the fact that 85% of MMA fans think that if you are bigger, its an automatic win. there are a lot of MW, LHW's that would startch a lot of HW's. speed beats size a lot of the time, LHW would be the optimal weight for an open weight challenger

No, it wouldn't be optimal. If it was the case they'd fight at HW.

Optimal =/= doable.

that doesn't make sense considering the context of my post. what I am saying is that being around the 205 mark means you are still big enough to grapple with a lot of the HW's, but you would most likely be faster than most HW's. I am talking about a open weight fighting environment, not deciding what weight class you should fight in
