I was thinking about buying a heavy bag and some gloves. All the stores around my house only sell Everlast bags and gloves but I've read some negative things about the brand. Do they make reliable bags and gloves? If they don't what brand should I look for?

I do not like (n)everlast products... personally I even hate their expensive gloves. It really depends on what you want. The best value is to buy the bag and stuff it yourself... it takes some time and effort but it is well worth it. I bough an outslayer bag and it is freakin tough as hell. I have beat on that thing and probably have about 300 hours on it and the only thing beat up is me. I also use it as a grappling dummy, throw it over my head, ground and pound, tackle it... It also gets beat on by my students... Body Bag Grappling Dummy 110lbs - $124.99 : outslayer.com

If your looking to get a pre-filled bag, cant go wrong with KO fightgear. They make great products for the money. Muay Thai Heavy Bags - KO Fightgear

Teardrop bags are great as well... Tear Drop Bags - KO Fightgear or Bowling pin bags Bowling Pin Punching Bag Black 120lbs - $125.00 : outslayer.com

The thing with Everlast is their entry level products are a complete waste of money but their high end gear is really good(but overpriced). I bought an Aries leather 100 pound bag about 2 months ago, it was just under $200 total shipped. It is my favorite bag to hit although i am a big fan of the Windy teardrop also. The bag is packed very well, i highly recommend it. For gloves i'd say Fairtex but you should really go try some on in person because theres nothing worse than a glove with no wrist support especially when hitting the bag(Especially if you have slim wrists). I think any glove with tight wrist support and some winning knuckle guards will do just fine

Check out Balazs Boxing. I have 2 speedbag platforms from them, a pullup bar, heavybag hanger, and a 150 lb heavybag. All their stuff is top quality. Brian is a real nice guy and will help you out. He sent me a couple tshirts and a pair of bag gloves over time from me ordering several times from him.

These are my favorite heavybags.
Balazs sponsored a gym I used to work out at - we had in total over 30 bags; including a 300lb monster!

My favorite as well. I've tried Fairtex, Ringside, and Everlast (a $200 leather and the one that was $500 that I think is more now) and the Balazs was the best.

I've never tried these vinyl heavy bags everyone is always raving about but i have a hard time believing that they are better than the all leather ones(especially when using elbows). I cant justify paying the same price for vinyl when theres leather out there for the same price or less

for banana bags, I've tried:
Fairtex, Title (leather and vinyl), TitleMMA, Ringside, CSI (leather and vinyl), Cageside, PKStar, Balasz, and we have an Outslayer we haven't hung yet.

for boxing style bags, I've tried:
Balasz, Ringside, and Everlast (canvas, durahide, and leather).

The thing about Balasz is that their coated canvas feels a lot more like a the old CSI vinyl bags (which feel very leathery) than the Cageside (where you can feel the cross-hatch of the canvas even though it's coated). They were pretty nice for everything, and they held up really well the ~2 years I used them.

As far as vinyl bags, it seems to be a more popular option these days. I think they may actually hold up better than leather over time. I've seen the surface on leather heavybags turn really rough over time. In fact, I much prefer the CSI vinyl bags to their leather bags; the leather bag we had from them turned into sandpaper over time and would cut your legs up pretty bad.

Bags don't last long in my current gym. I've seen leather Title, CSI, & Ringside bags destroyed in months. We have a Cageside bag that's lasted since 2009, but it's leaking and on its last legs. We have a vinyl Title bag that's surviving well currently, but it feels like kicking plastic and with the pvc pipe running down the middle, there's no fold to the bag - nobody likes it.

For elbows, often it's the logos that are more problems than the material of the bag itself.

The Krav maga gym I go to for fitness has an entire room of Title and TitleMMA bags. I can only assume the Title bags are leather - they don't have the plasticy feel of the red Title banana bag at my other gym; the TitleMMA bags are almost certainly synthetic. Nice bags either way, but the biggest drawback with them is the logos - some have huge, obnoxious plastic logos that split and are placed at elbow height, so you will get cut up throwing elbows.

CSI vinyl bags are/were nice because no logos - so they're probably third after Balazs and maybe Fairtex. Unfortunately, I don't think they sell them anymore.

Could've sworn the Fairtex bag I bought way back when was leather, but it seems that they only sell synthetic leather bags these days.

These Twins bags are also supposed to be some of the best bags out there.

The problem that I have seen with heavy bags is that most local sellers find it difficult to bring in the Thai made bags, because they are a nightmare to ship from Thailand and the cost of shipping is incredibly expensive (even when unfilled).

Some sellers have started to bring the bags in unfilled then they get them filled locally. However the next problem they run into is that there are not many people who specialise in the filling bags. It might sound like a simple job. However if they use the wrong filling and dont use a hydrolic (cant remember how to spell that word :-)) ram then the bags dont hang right and feel weird when they using. This is a bit of shame because you then get local brands like Everlast selling their own brand of heavy bags, which in my opinion are a low quality.

My advice is if you can get hold of a Thai made heavy bag filled then go down that route, because they are normally a better made bag than the ones that the local sellers put out there. Good heavy bags from Thailand are Fairtex, Twins, Boon and Windy. You may also want to look at MTG, but most of those bags are found in Europe and not state side.

They did have a leather heavy bag. It was a tear drop one if I remember correctly. However all their bags now are vinyl. Cheaper for them to produce ;-)

Fairtex still makes leather heavy bags. HB1, 2, 3, and HB4 are leather.

ahh not seen those bags for years!!!!! :-) every time I go down to Fairtex I just see their vinyl bags. i will have to ask them if they still produce the leather ones, because last time i spoke to the Fairtex dealer in the UK he told me they stopped, as they were too expensive to produce.

agreed. that one is a great bag. the pole bags are good too. it's just having somewhere to put up the pole bags that can be an issue.

They make them for sure. They are still for sale on Fairtex.com

haha :-) just because they are on the site it doesnt mean they have them :-) recently ive had a problem with their shirts. they are on the site. i even ordered them with Fairtex at Bangplee then 2 weeks later they told me they dont make them anymore. I was like why didnt you tell me this when I ordered. They were like errrrm and gave me no reason. let me find out properly for you about the bags, because I am going down to Fairtex in a bit. I will let you know about this one.

Hey I'm looking to get a heavy bag. Right now I just have a freestanding bag that's not too great. Is the teardrop and bowling ball bags mostly for knees or are they good also for kicks and punches

I had the CSI teardrop bag several years ago. I used it for a few months and one of the nylon straps broke on it. It SUCKED for kicks because at a weight only around 60lbs it moves too much.
