Heavens Gate: The Cult of Cults (HBO)

I remember Hale-Bopp

I miss going outside every night and seeing that.

I wonder where he is now

Nah, they wore Nike.

Hence why Rebok would sponsor the doc...You think Nike wants anyone to remember the time a bunch of scientology rejects killed themselves wearing their shoes?

The demand for the shoes went up afterwards, but Nike pulled the plug on them. The originals are worth quite a bit, since they are a grail shoe to sneakerheads.

I can vaguely remember this happening. I was in the sixth grade. There’s a really good podcast on Spotify that works sort of as a companion to documentary. What a bunch of loonies. They all had the brainwashed crazy eyes.

So were they waiting for Hale-Bopp for all those years, or did they just decide on an ad hoc basis towards the end that the comet was what they were waiting for?

Edit: I guess Hale-Bopp was only discovered in 1995. I had mistakenly assumed it was one that had been known about centuries and would pop by every 100 years or whatever. So obviously they were not waiting for it.

Yup its like the discovery of the Comet triggered more of their insanity, really sad how people can easily be taken by mass hysteria.

there was a cult called 'the family' and they were pretty fucked up.

Wanting to belong to a tribe is a very strong drive for many people. Be careful, because it’s being used against us.

Wow. Did this creep me out. I was only vaguely familiar with the Heavens Gate story but man this is crazy. I was pretty shocked with how much footage and documentation there is about these people and how many former members are willing to do interviews and some seem to even miss the lifestyle. If you haven't seen this I'd highly recommend it. It is a little slow but make sure you watch until the end. I cant remember the last documentary I watched that disturbed me this much.

Saw Title, thought:

I watched the show. It drew me in. I'm fascinated as to how easily people will become indoctrinated into bullshit.

At what point do you choose to believe a guy who claims that you should cut your junk off and kill yourself because aliens are coming to pick you up?

https://www.heavensgate.com/
The old website is still around
If I remember correctly its ran and has been run by just one person all these years. Apparently they still believe in their "mission" or wharever.

Imagine how weird it must be. Everyone else suicided and "ascended" and decades later you're still just kicking around...updating the website and responding to email every now and then

I also remember old dudes wife/co-cult-creater died of cancer before being able to "ascend" so old dude had to change the rules so he could tell his followers she was still there waiting for them.

The old interviews of the followers the day before they did it are some of the creepiest shit I've ever seen

Just as they're stirring that sweet sweet kool aid

A memorable detail was the belief by cult members that they were going to board a ship inside the tail of
the Hale-Bopp comet.
