His problem is not exactly how to land one but that he can't get his leg up high enough to hit the head of an average sized man ...Landing head kick in sparring require two things:
1) having the flexible enough, and having the balance to land it without full power.
2) having a realistic view on how a head kick work in a fight. You dont really look to land it clean, from seeing a clear opening. Almost no one have that kind of eyes and speed.
What you do how ever, is to either set it up and hope from a opening because the person you fight, make a mistake by thinking its a body kick, or some other bad habit.. Or just throw it hard against him.
Because you can hurt them with a blocked kick, or a kick that just touches the ypper part of the head.

I could do high kicks cause I was a K1 CroCop Remy Bonkasky fan and just trained them daydreaming I'm gonna be in K1 and just spammed them at home on my heavybag. Never ever got close to doing splits. And could head kick high before even incorporating any stretching. So for me it was out of motivation, fun and just throwing them a relatively lot. Maybe a important factor is that I started doing that at age 17-18. I'm a firm believe that what you do young is gonna stick with you.Large part of flexibility in a is mental/neurological. It's hard to believe but your brain stops you from doing motions that are foreign to it.
once you overcome that barrier, your brain welcomes this motion into its family and you dont even need stretching, technically speaking.
what I wrote above does not apply to very old people, they are genuinely stiff.

I'm 39. I trained taekwondo for a year back in 2011-2012, but I didn't spar often and never attempted any headkick. So I have no idea if I could kick high or not back then.So how old are you ? You could high kick when you were younger. I'm 38 and still can do it.
I don't think I can fight Merab and Illia. I mean, Merab is just gonna shoot in for a single-leg takdown on me while I headkick Illia into oblivion. I have only taken one jiu jitsu class in my entire life, so it's probably gonna take a while for me to submit Merab from the bottom. I prefer to fight them individually, so that I can knock them out one after the other.Fight Merab and Ilia

Throw head kicks and head kicks get higher.
Today gyms are closed in Herzegovina, so I'm gonna go for some sprints, stair runs and yep throw kicks at the back. I already did a rest day yesterday and thursday now it's time to train for a week straight. I'm stagnating at 112 kg.
