Headgear for BJJ

I ordered the Cliff Keen Fusions also last night since Dick's had a Columbus day sale. Hopefully I like them as much as the Twisters I have.

I need to get head gear too. I have a small cauliflower ear from strikes actually and every time I roll my ears get rubbed. Lots of proper technique requires the head to be against the opponent like takedowns duh

i wear headgear because 1. cali ear hurts a lot. the only time I got it I couldn't sleep on my side for weeks 2. I work in software sales, and can't look like a martian and 3. My wife thinks cali ear is ugly as shit and I pick my battles wisely

I use Matman ultra-soft, light and will not hurt your teammates when rolling.

This is the only head gear that I found to be bearable for BJJ. My wife said cauli was a deal breaker so I wore this as a white and partially as a blue belt. Now as a purple I don't wear it at all.

I've heard all kinds of things like it's genetic, it depends on how much you stick your head in - both I think are partially true. Some people develop scar tissue fast and others don't. Some people have that grinding style of BJJ and they seem to get cauli. My style is more finesse based and I rarely stick my head in for no reason - I also wore head gear when I had no style and was a newb.

I'd like to wear headgear to judo, to tell you the truth, but over never been to a single school where anyone wore it. I don't even know if it is legal.

For bjj, I've seen tons of people wearing headgear. Sometimes I am the only one on a given day, but it is accepted in the sport.

Do your training partners a favor and get soft headgear. Training with guys wearing headgear is mildly annoying but I understand. But the guys that wear hard headgear and fucking use it to grind and rub on me? They get full dick mode pressure and discomfort/pain stuff any and every time I'm in a dominant position

I used the Cliff Keen Fusion yesterday and I liked them a lot. They have a lower profile and are softer than the twister. The twister has a hard outer shell and the fusion has a padded outer shell. The fusion took more time to get the fit correct than the twister. However, once I got the fit right they were pretty good. The comfort level is the same. When I get more ear guards it will probably be another fusion because of the lower profile and soft body.

The reviews I read said they don't offer much protection. What is your opinion?

I tried a bunch of soft ear guard ( bad boy / venum / and a few other Jiu jutsu brands) over the years as I really wanted to avoid cauli after my 1st one.
And to be honest they are by far the best I have had. Now I have two of them so that I rotate now and then.
It's sure that they will not protect as much as the hard ear guard ( but they will as well not hurt your teammates and will be more comfortable), but they do protect enough for BJJ use. Have them for more than a year, and didn't hurt my ear once.
In short am happy with the protection they offer.
