Is a head/skull crush legit or just a bull sh*t move? I'm only a three stripe blue belt, so I didn't really know whether to get pissed or not.

So I was rolling with a three-stripe brown belt last week... Also an older guy (early 50s), so not really a young hot-shot douche.

We were in north-south and he basically triangled my head with his legs... My arm was not caught 'in the triangle', so it wasn't really a choke/triangle. So it wasn't anything I was going to tap out to, but it did hurt like hell... He was basically crushing my skull/ears with his thighs. Besides having his balls and sweaty gi in my face, it wasn't fun either. I wriggled my head out after a minute or so....

It was a 10 minute roll... So he ended up doing the move again a few minutes later... Same deal, and I escaped after a minute or so. I was sort of pissed after the roll. My ears hurts like hell (don't want to get cauli) and I had a headache... Didn't say much to the guy since he was a brown belt... It wasn't competition training.... I Don't think it is 'illegal' probably, but seemed like b.s.

thoughts?

People in their 50s can be douches too, wear headgear and deal with it. I don't know that i have ever heard of a skull crush finish but i have seen a rear naked choke across the jaw work. You could always ask him to show you what he was trying to do?

I didn't get a chance to really talk to him after... and I was pissed, so it probably wouldn't have been a pleasant conversation...

I couldn't find anything anywhere of it being a submission... But he was trying to submit me by just squeezing his legs together and twisting my neck... (He was on top by the way). He wasn't advancing his position or trying to get a hold of my arms or anything.

yes, thinking of ear guards... my ears still hurt...

Sounds really weird maybe he was trying to get you to react by opening up sounds like a pain compliance thing, might be filing it under the bullshit move file. Is he a lot bigger than you?

Similar, but usually with new white belts, do I have guys try to head crush me off some horrible guillotine attempt or something. If I can't Von flue them quickly, I'll often talk to them while in the "head crush".
Say something like, "your just crushing my head + laugh" to make them relax a bit an give up the spazzy head crush.

This lets them know that u aren't being choked or threatened, just being held. Pretty much stalling at that point.

yes, he was bigger.... I'm only about 160... He was short/stocky, maybe 210 or 220. I'm younger though (mid 30s), he's older (mid 50s.)

I don't know, I do it sometimes. I will triangle the head from N/S and try to work on the arms or even insert a choke. But it is more a control position, I don't really squeeze hard or try to skull crush. If he was physically straining, I would say bullshit. If he was applying hard even pressure, I say legit control position.

FWIW, I usually break it out on smaller guys that move too much for my liking.

I thought only noobs did those things because they don't have anything else to offer.

Of course the head crush is legit. Watch Magical Witch Punie-chan. When her opponent's limbs were too flexible to break, she used her super headlock to crack his skull. They then became BEST FRIENDS FOREVER AFTERWARDS.

So, yea. I think this brown belt wants to be your friend.

ive probably done that kind of thing before going for a n/s choke or some lapel choke where i didnt do it properly but that obviously wasnt my objective. ive had some guys (upper belts) say to me when im going for something if its just crushing and not choking, im thankful for it because not only does it stop them from having to take the pain from an improper technique but also lets me not waste time and energy doing something improperly, also allows an opportunity to adjust. if someone is trying to crush ur face/head just to get a tap then they r being retarded and not helping themselves much.

Where were your arms positioned in this situation? If one arm was across he may have been attempting a legit head and arm choke. It is not how you would consider a traditional triangle, as the arm is not actually trapped inside the triangle, but rather held in place across the neck by hip pressure.

It may just be me,but if a move used on me is legal or illegal doesn't matter. What are you gonna do in the street if you get caught? At least in training you can tap. This is where I disagree with so many BJJ schools training only for comps, with rules where you can do this but you can't do that. There's a purple belt in my class that does a head scissor from a side control transition and it works. I don't complain,I ask how he did it and think about how I got caught and how I might escape. Before I started BJJ I came from a submission grappling background. When I first started,I would use the knee reap and heel hooks, with caution and control of course no one ever got injured. But soon after I was told not to use them and I agree as long as they're not taught to a newbie white belt with no grappling experience. I just think you should be prepared for everything, even the "illegal" stuff.

One of the black belts at my gym will do something like it every now and then just to control you, usually when losing a dominant position and having his legs close to your head. He doesn't triangle his legs, though, he just squeezes it between his knees to stop you from turning in any direction as he salvages his position. Looks crude, works well.

Obviously, though, this is not what the guy in question was going for. There are certain ways of finishing a triangle without the arm in, but this doesn't sound like a legit attempt at any kind of sub, nor a way to improve position.

the good old days of poking each others eyes and kicking the balls to keep real for the streetz...really Pheonix5

The randori concept from Kano where he took the "dangerous" techniques in order to train the rest of the technques at 100%. That what BJJ is all about really.

Sarcasm duly noted. No one said eye pokes and nut kicks. An "illegal" grappling move can be trained with control. I caught a guy in a heel hook in class about a month ago, honestly it was simply an old reaction. When I realized where I was at I let it go. We applied them in rolling at my old school all the time and no none ever got injured because we used control. Again no one should be taught or allowed to use these things until they've been training awhile, but to throw them out or disregard them because they're not allowed in competition is ridiculous. A student should know these things exist and be prepared.

I agree with you.

I was talking with a teamate and he told me that all leg locks were allowed at his gym back in Brasil from white belts.

I was surprised and asked about the dreaded heelhook. He just replied "all the leg locks"

To be honest, I thought this was a troll thread.

Why?

I never would expect a brown belt ("3 stripes") to attempt to tap a blue belt via crushing t bag.. I mean just squeezing your tights on someone head got to be the biggest joke ever.

Ha,true. Just ads insult to injury. We trained the kimura from north-south,where basically your ass is in their face, only a couple of times. The uncomfortable part is that our school is coed and we were training the move multiple times. I guess you could say I was lucky and got a decent looking girl to work with but we were both uncomfortable. Probably more so for her.

Some people do what they can to win. Haha, some old guys at my gym pinch noses and cover mouths. It's a bit weirder, especially for people doing comp training, but yeah, meh.

meh, I have gone for this just to throw the person off for a second, but would never squish, its just a d-bag move to do to a partner. I remember I was rolling and did it, and my coach saw it and said "just remember, if someone did that to me, im not tapping, and when I get out, im going to be PISSED lol."
