Introduction

Hatashiai is a realistic 3D FTG game of Samurai Sword Fighting (Kenjutsu), developed using Unreal Engine 4.

Literally, the Japanese word “Kenjutsu” means the method or technique of sword. While in fact, Kenjutsu is a complicated melee weapon combat system, including the effective guards, flexible footwork and efficient coordination of the whole body. By taking all these issues into consideration, we aim to make Hatashiai a serious sword fighting game, presenting how real melee combats between legendary masters would be like.

Key Features

To best capture the quintessence of Kenjutsu, this game is designed to include the following features:
- Cultural & Historical Accuracy
At least eight famous Ryuha (shcool of Kenjutsu) with utterly different fighting styles will be included. All skills and moves are real existing techniques developed and used by the ancient Samurai/Warriors. Characters of each Ryuha will of course, be legendary martial artists that have left glorious names in history.
Characters with weapons other than swords (e.g. spears, naginata or even harquebuss, etc.) will be added as non-controllable NPCs first, and afterwards made accessible to the players when their skills/moves are well balanced.

- Pure physics based Sword Contact Detection
Physics based contact detection is introduced for all Kamae (guards/stances) and moves. Unlike many other games, one won't be able to press a single button to block most of his/her opponent's attacks anymore. To make effective defenses and seize advantages in a fight, players need to make proper moves according to his/her opponent's attacks all the time.

- One-Hit Kill Fighting System
No life bar nor health point in this game! Similar to the Bushido Blade series, with a single hit one can disable or even kill his/her opponent. On the other hand, precise physics based contact detection of the weapon and the variety of balanced fighting skills will significantly enhance the viability of the fighters, preventing Hatashiai from becoming a boring seckilling game.

- Weapon customization
Weapons can be customized in detail in Hatashiai. You can freely swap in and out each part of your weapon (e.g. blade, saya, tsuba, habaki, seppa, tsuka, etc.) Note that swapping parts is about more than just the looks, it can affect your performance in a combat in different ways.

Game Modes

The first release version will include the following modes:
Single-player
- Story mode for at least 20 controllable characters
- Practice mode in which you fight against AIs with real sword or non-lethal wooden sword

Local multi-player
- 1P vs 2P mode

P.S.: Online multiplayer modules enabling players to fight in field operations or castle siege tasks are also inside our future plan.

Audience

Our goal is to bring the Bushido Blade and Kengo fans back as well as new players in. So we would welcome all the following people to be our audience:
- Bushido Blade and Kengo series fans longing for a remake or spiritual successor of those old classics
- Players of fighting games that want something different but serious
- Martial arts and melee weapon enthusiasts
- People who have an interest in samurai, ninja or history

This looks fucking epic. I loved Bushido Blade so much.

I liked Kengo a lot back in the day. Not really because it was that good of a game, I have a thing for Samurais. This game looks a lot like Kengo, even in the graphics lol. It looks pretty rough. I'll still play it though if it gets made

bushido blade was one of the first games i imported to play on my ps1 when it first came out. i loved it. Every match was tense, though inevitably some asshole would just run away the entire time, which would make the match last forever.

I'm super tempted to donate.
