If UFC had a Mayweather type guy (not style but skill level) that went like 50-0 in UFC whilst defended his belt many many times do you think it would be good for the sport? Just a random question, not trying to make any particular point.

I can think of 5 champs where guys from the division below could seriously contend for their belt, not to mention the contenders in their own weight class. The Champs are not clearly the best in the division so I would say the title has lost its prestige

Pretty much what Im saying.

Who could say this if GSP, Silva, Aldo, Jones were still champs in their primes?

All we got now are MM and maybe Cruz. Tho he is not getting any younger

Their were plenty of better options.

Faber was 4-3 in his last seven but should have been 3-4 because he was getting killed till he eye gouged Francisco. That sound like it was worth yet another shot?
I'm not saying Faber was a great option and Cruz was a big favorite for a reason. But in early March who do you give it to? Assuncao and MacDonald are out for so long. Barao changes weight classes. Sterling and Almeida are green as hell.

With Conor not defending, complete ignorance of their own rankings and contenders, and interim titles being ''created'' for marketing purposes, it definitely diminishes the significance and value of being the champ.

I voted Other.

UFC champion doesn't mean you are the best the way it has in the past. When the UFC pays fighters enough for it to be worth proving you are the best it will change. For now fighters make more money making Appearances with the belt than they do defending it so thats the problem.

I find it amazing that Michael Bisping, of all people, is a UFC champion.

Not only a champ..

But defeated Anderson Silva AND the current MW champ in a row

Even his family on stage was like
WTF!!!??!?!!! :D:D

It is always odd to me when someone thinks that a rapidly changing title reflects weak champions. If a division is strong, it is unlikely that anyone will be able to hold a title for very long. If a division is weak, a single star can stay on top for a long time. Of course, in the latter scenario, there must be at least one great fighter. If all fighters in a division are of low talent, the title will be as unstable as if the division were very competitive.

I just looked at page 1 of Sherdog. One thread title mentions Woodley, one mentions Cruz, one mentions Miocic. That's it for champions. Pathetic.

Back in the day, anybody with a win over a champ was considered very elite themselves.. a win over GSP, PEnn, Silva etc.

I don't know man. Was Serra ever really considered elite? He's a very good fighter no doubt. but, elite? How about Forrest Griffin? Or Tim Sylvia?

I find it amazing that Michael Bisping had feather fists for 25 UFC matches, and as soon as the prize was in front of him, he turned into Earnie Shavers.

Everybody wants money fights now and it seems like the lack of new talent has made the divisions stagnant. Not sure what happened, but MMA was so much more healthier a few years ago. Maybe it's the lack of sister organizations thats making it harder to find prospects.

It basically secures you the number one spot in any rankings, even sources outside the ufc so, deserving or not, it pretty much carries the #1 in the world rankings

Here? Of course.

Unless it's the turds hugging Conor's balls, once you lose even a single fight, you're chopped liver.

MMA fans suck.

It's because the best guys are actually in the UFC for the most part and the top fighters are always going up against a murderer's row of talent. Any guy can lose on any given night. There are no gimme fights or breaks anymore. Everyone keeps knocking each other off.
