Has there ever been anyone that set a pace as crazy as Merab for 5 rounds?

Some may say Colby but Merab came and made Colby become Temu.
Age will only be his weakness, amazing cardio.

The Aldo vs Merab fight showed it all.
Aldo stuffed every takedown. Took no damage and still lost a decision.
I feel that to fight Merab you have to train for that specific kind of stalling and spamming. I guess you never expect someone who is at the top to be terrible at everything and just bumrush you non stop spamming stuff all the time and never stop. These guys are used to smart, intelligent technical fighters who take their time to pick the right shots, get a TD at the right moment, feints etc. Merab just swings and goes head down to your crotch and spams without trying to do any damage and never stops.

Prime Aldo would have been a nightmare for a mediocre fighter like Merab tho.

Colby, Tony, Cain

Merab 135 pounds

vs Umar
293 punches
7/30 Tds
2:22 Control time

vs Yan
401 punches
11/49 Tds
6:53 Control time

Colby 170 pounds
vs Lawler
541 punches
10/18 TDs
8:43 Control time

Pro Colby:
Doing this at 170 is much harder, as bigger fighters have less cardio. Their muscles need more oxygen. Physics.
More Control time = Less Tds needed. Sometimes not always less punches, depends on gnp.
Con Colby:
Lawler was willingly just rolling and defending punches

Both are feather fisted CEOs

Cain vs Jds was impressive given their size

GSP was the first one to weaponize pace, came out in the 5th round like in the first.

Colby had a terrific cardio, Merab is on another level. Shooting TD's on an opponent that still has gas in their tank takes FAR more energy than punching a mostly stationary opponent who's content to lay back against the cage.

There's simply nobody else, ever, that would use 38 failed TD attempts as a weapon. I was saying this years ago, that his style is gonna be impossible to deal with unless someone can land big and take him out. When you're doing nothing but defending TD's, you aren't offering any offense of your own. Yan was never in trouble, never hurt...but had no chance of winning vs Merab.

You might say Frank Shamrock did that to Tito, but GSP is definitely the modern era fighter who set the standard.

He learned to manage his cardio in such an incredible way by always making his training sessions 25 minutes, so he would always know how much energy he could use through the fight.

Pretty sure the answer is no! It makes up for his relative deficiencies for otherwise superior fighters - Umar for one, an many others striking wise/BJJ. Not saying he doesn't deserve to be champion, but his cardio is his ultimate weapon.

i'd say no. he's like the original energizer bunny.

Crazy that you can't even ask him to empty the tank in a fight because there's not enough minutes to do so.

How is it possible y'all didnt mention T-ferg more ? In his prime he was just making opponents crumble under pressure and blood.

Honorable mention to Holloway, too.

Probably because T-ferg was doing so much damage with those pointy elbows back then that his cardio got over looked cause people were more focused on the beat up faces of his opponents.

That was the main difference with Tony no these other cardio machines, Tony did hurt a lot his opponents, I also feel Holloway gets overlooked in this category, the guy can cause damage if he commits

Max (for striking) or Tony I think. Merab is special with his cardio, it's a shame he only has a couple years left before he really fades. After Umar, there really isn't anyone in the division. Would like to see Merab vs Topuria eventually.
tony??? delete this, you could have atleast said frankie edgar or colby or something
