Has Palhares ever explained why he doesn't let go after a submission?

Seriously it just seems like a really jackass thing to do and I wonder how he got so skilled with that kind of behaviour if he also did it during practice

I've been wondering about this for months. Glad you brought it up.

Shouldn't this be in worldwide mma forum ? Palhares is not a UFC fighter.

His nickname is Tree Stump. He's built like one and also about as smart as one too.

He goes full retard in all his fights and blocks out all of his senses. Not only does he hold them too long, he goes for one of the most painful submissions (heel hook) all the time. There's a difference between holding a choke too long and holding a submission that's designed to make someone tap out from pain. I'm surprised any of the guys he beat with a heel hook even walk anymore.

He grew up poor. That gives you carte blanche to do anything. It's on page 2 of Luke Thomas's Bigg Book of Liberal Excuses.

They explained it by saying that he started as Bustamante's protegee. Murilo was a victim of a fake tap from Matt Lindland, and literally had to sub him twice to win the UFC belt. Because of that incident, Palhares was told to never let go until the ref's intervention. Honestly, I think this is a bullshit excuse : Bustamante has trained tons of fighters and Palhares is the only one with that issue. My guess is that he is simply a brute, one of my trainers trained several times with him and said pretty much the same thing.

He's not paying attention, he's just trying to kill people. It probably also doesn't help that he was trained by Bustamante, who was almost screwed by letting go after Lindland tapped then said he didn't.

It probably goes back to his early celebration leading to a loss. He needs to be really sure that the ref is ending the fight now.

He just put out a statement in some article i read about it recently but i cant find it. In short he basically blamed it on his rough childhood.

I think he explained it as being caught up in the moment. The language barrier and not quiting until the ref steps in.

*edit, I am not a supporter of injuries at all.

For everyone interested, he fought a no-gi BJJ match against Gary Tonon. Another leglock specialist but way smaller. It was on Polaris Pro 3 last weekend:
Very nice technical battle

He kind of explains it in this interview from a couple of days ago. He also says he would kill Conor McGregor:D

At least he understands that most MMA fans see his behavior as poor sportsmanship. Palhares says, “I am not a monster but I know that many people think I fight like one.”

So what’s his excuse? Palhares blames his childhood. “People ask me why I am like how I am in the ring but if everyone knew about my childhood then they would understand,” he said. What Palhares didn’t mention is that there are plenty of other fighters with troubled pasts, and that they don’t risk injuring opponents by hanging on to submissions.

He tried to explain his behavior in the cage. “I am seen as bad but that is during the fight. A fight is a fight and sometimes my mindset changes when I get in there,” he says.

A new father, Palhares claims he is a changed man. “The arrival of my baby boy two months ago has given me a new perspective on life and on fighting. I will still win at all costs but now I am grounded,” says the Brazilian.

Palhares even discussed fighting Conor McGregor. “I would consider returning to the UFC just to fight McGregor … I would kill him. He is too small and weak in Jiu-Jitsu to beat me. It would be a privilege to fight him but I would dominate with my ground game and submit him easily. When I play the fight in my head I see him giving in from a foot hold,” says Palhares.
