Hezbollah says calls for it not to intervene in war 'will have no effect'

BEIRUT, Oct 13 (Reuters) - Hezbollah deputy chief Naim Qassem said on Friday that the group would not be swayed by calls for it to stay on the sidelines of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, saying the party was "fully ready" to contribute to the fighting.

"The behind-the-scenes calls with us by great powers, Arab countries, envoys of the United Nations, directly and indirectly telling us not to interfere will have no effect," he told supporters gathered in the southern Beirut suburb for a rally.

"Hezbollah knows its duties perfectly well. We are prepared and ready, fully ready," Qassem said.

The group has already clashed with Israel across the Lebanese border multiple times in the past week in the deadliest confrontations since they fought a month-long war in 2006.

The cross-border rocket fire and shelling followed the assault by Palestinian faction Hamas against Israeli towns and Israel's retaliatory bombardment of the Gaza Strip.

But sources say Hezbollah has designed its moves so far to be limited in scope, preventing a big spillover into Lebanon while keeping Israeli forces occupied.

"The question being asked, which everyone is waiting for, is: what Hezbollah will do and what will its contribution be?" Qassem said. "We will contribute to the confrontation within our plan... when the time comes for any action, we will carry it out."

Qassem spoke at a rally where hundreds of people had gathered in solidarity with Palestinians, waving the flags of Palestine and of Hezbollah.

Other rallies were organized in Palestinian camps as well as cities across southern and eastern Lebanon where Hezbollah has a strong presence. Fearing a breakaway group might try to cross the border, the Lebanese army deployed units across the south.

Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah has not yet commented on developments. He met on Friday morning with Iranian foreign minister Hossein Amirabdollahian to discuss the conflict between Israel and Hamas.

Amirabdollahian said on Thursday that Iran's allies in the region would respond to Israeli "crimes" against Palestinians, and that Israel would then have to bear the consequences.

I'm speaking about the past few decades as well. From their own admissions they've targeted buildings and made claims of "Hamas cells" and "weapons caches" regardless of if any rockets were fired from those locations.

I mean if we want to keep going back they leveled over 200 Palestinian villages in 1947 before Israel became a reality in 1948.

This whole excuse of killing civilians indiscriminately because "Hamas was hiding there" is completely bunk.

I'm not questioning the horror and abhorrence of killing civilians. What I was questioning was the lack of assistance from nearby Muslim nations. especially those with the means to do so.

You have reading problems. Jews are followers of Judaism. It’s a religion.
There is no such thing you try to claim.
Most Jews are converts. This is proven in historical records.
All these converts tried to link themselves with ‘god’s chosen people’ once they converted to Judaism.

you want people to accept your false extraordinary claims as the bases of every discussion as a presupposition.
Weirdly you can take a genetic test and come up Jewish. Probably a conspiracy though right? Not sure I’d trust you with showers or ovens

This is really sad.

This man is actually happy his daughter died quickly instead of being held by monsters. These are the Hamas "freedom fighters" that some of you are cheering on. A father has to celebrate his daughter's swift death vs. being held by monsters who would probably rape, torture, and kill her slowly.

Fun fact: If you're captured in a Middle Eastern country, you're going to get raped. They WILL not discriminate between male and female either.

Any hole's a goal as it will show you, they have dominance over you as their captive.

You can use that same rational to excuse Hamas actions for the thousands of Palestinians slaughtered for decades at the hands of Israel.

I don't, because I don't condone attacks on civilians regardless of the side.

You seem fine with one side doing it though. Killing babies is OK in retaliation I guess.

What was wrong with doing what Dr. King and Mahatma Ghandi did? Achieving their goals through non-violence. If you go in your back pocket and start bustin' (grab a weapon and engage in violence), don't whine and cry when the people you're firing at start shooting back.

All Hamas has to do is just stop the murder, give back the hostages, and all of this will probably stop.

this is what i have always wondered as well. Saudi Arabia, Qatar and the UAE alone could restore the infrastructure and upgrade Gaza in a matter of months. They seemed to be able to create gigantic skyscrapers, and soccer stadiums in record time, but they don't seem to invest much into Gaza.

Spot on.

So, I have a funny story...You have to remember I live in Iowa of all places.

My MIL was diagnosed with a gliobastoma. Brain tumors are actually quite rare and generally not hereditary. My MIL has been alive now for more than two years (she was given 12-18 months) bless her.

About a year after the diagnosis, one of her sisters is diagnosed with a gliobastoma as well. The odds of two sisters developing these tumors is like 4 million to 1. My wife's aunt unfortunately passed away. So is this hereditary?

My wife goes into panic mode and arranges to take this genetics test to see if there's anything wrong with her genes. Insurance covers it. It comes back inconclusive.

She demands that I get one. So I schlep down to the hospital to give blood. The woman researcher is asking me a bunch of questions and finds out that I'm an Ashkenazi Jew. Gets very, very excited. So now the head doctor who the building and practice is named after has to come in.

Doc: It says here you have Ashkenazi Jewish identity.
Me: Yeah.
Doc: Wow, do you know what that means?
Me: No rice and corn on Passover
Doc: Huh
Me: Yeah, my ancestors left Judea following the Roman Conquest and settled in Eastern Europe.
Doc: Oh. I guess you do

On the bright side, insurance picked it up.
