I've spent time in both Israel and Palestine. Let's just say I'll add it to my list of places I've been where I'm glad I went when I did. Ukraine probably being the next biggest shining example....

That being said, I was really surprised with Palestine. I think my expectation was so low, I thought it was going to be a complete dump with camps and shit. It's actually way nicer and more developed than I thought it would be. Jerusalem is perhaps the holiest city in the world, with three major religions sharing it. In peace time, it's truly a remarkable and wonderful place.

To clarify the self-hating jew comment, that's what Finkelstein and company would say they get labelled as and not something I would agree with. Conversations about Israel and their government policies and action often result in accusations of antisemitism. And even Jews themselves can get smeared that way as being "self-hating". In comparison, if one like myself were to complain about U.S. foreign policy in the middle east, it's exponentially more unlikely that I would be smeared as a self-hating Christian.

Sometimes, a bloody nose is enough. Bin Laden must have known that for all the spectacular death toll of 9/11, it could only end with an overwhelming military response by the US. He still thought it was a price worth paying.

It is quite cheap. Like a "get out of jail for free" card. Do anything now, point to the tragedy of the past.

At the same time, there ought to be some level of tolerance because it's a level of destruction that most of us can't relate to - so a degree of hypersensitivity isn't shocking. Most of us here live comfy lives; we saw 9-11 and the out of line response on what we did to Iraq without anybody punished for it.

Reality is 9-11 is something like .00001% of the destruction Russia faced in world war 2. And a beyond tiny fraction of what happened the Jewish populace.

I'm old enough to remember at the time of 9-11 a not insignificant amount of people advocating for a nuclear weapon response - because of what a group of jungle gym trained guerilla terrorists did. So I don't go too hard on Israelis and Russians who get irrational when it comes to perceived threats to their countries.

Israel is smart enough to realise storming into Gaza (right away) isn't exactly a genius move, they've just signed the permission to do so.
Hamas could have coordinated it with Hezbollah as well.
Hence Israel is beefing up the defence of the northern border before rushing south.

As to the why, that's a good question, there are so many interests at play in that region. behind the scenes you ofcourse have Iran supporting this operation.
Could be a move to force an Israeli (over)reaction and thus hindering any Israel/Saudi normalisation talks.
And on the more conspiracy theory end you have some people thinking Netanyahu "allowed" it to happen to stop the ongoing constitutional crisis.
Which is a bit more out there imo. Hamas still started this
