Half Service Restaurant: How Much To Tip?

It literally makes me cringe that some people don't tip 20%. If that's you, here's a little FYI... You embarrass everyone that's with you if you're out in a group. If you don't have the money to tip, you don't have the money to be eating/drinking out, or ordering in.

Not sure about your background/travel history but all Muricans that have never stepped foot out of the USA will think like you.

Not saying that's good or bad. Just saying.

When the whole "tipping" idea was created (1922?) it was by Americans that hoped to god that no other system would be learned/discovered.

For some reason moreso than religious buttholes (not all religious people are b-holes etc etc) and loud political incongruity, the battle over tipping enrages me the most of anything on the internet.

Forever defending servers, even shitty ones. 15% is zero for tipping. Live and let live.

I've been all over the world...

Dislike religion and always tip 20%? I think we're going to get along just fine, my friend...

fuck 15-20% tipping and fuck judgmental people

in the united states, at the end of the day they make min wage one way or another. a couple of people have stated already, if they make less than min wage after tips, the employer has to cover the difference

why do they deserve 15-20% for doing their job and not the guy bagging your groceries or the cleaning lady emptying out your trash and scrubbing toilets at the office or something?

regardless of excellent service quality, food or restaurant, I tip about 5-10% because i'm a nice guy

Nope, that's not true at all. If you have enough money to cover the bill, you have enough money to go out. And I never, ever tip 20% unless the service is excellent. 15% should be the max tip people pay, unless the service was out of this world.

Tipping is a reward for good service. It's not part of the bill. You'd do well to remember that if your a waiter or a waitress.

Totally agree. Every debit/cc machine preset tip is set to 15% with the option of tipping more/less. Every large group bill I see has 15% gratuity added to it already.

15% is the standard.

When I was a server is was 10% (way back late 80's/early 90's) and I was happy to get it.

I had a great server the other night and I tipped her $2 on every $7 drink I ordered. She was fast, friendly, organized and even though she was slammed busy she never lost her cool. That deserves a few extra bucks imo.

I got some ass hat talking on their cell phone while I'm waiting 20 minutes and we're the only table in the place AND they fucked up my order- they get shit. I left $1. But that was because I didn't want to waste more time waiting for my change.

True.

A tipped employee engages in an occupation in which he or she customarily and regularly receives more than $30 per month in tips. An employer of a tipped employee is only required to pay $2.13 per hour in direct wages if that amount combined with the tips received at least equals the federal minimum wage. If the employee

I'm assuming like an all you can eat buffett is something like that. At that point when they're clearing your dishes and refilling your drinks then 10% is customary for something like that I was told.

I'm exactly the same way. I tipped a little over 20% last time I went out with some friends and family - our waitress was very nice and friendly and we were a tough table, my friends kept changing their minds about stuff and my cousin is deaf, which caused some troubles.

She was very cool tho so she got more than I would otherwise have given, and I told her boss she did great.

If you're telling me that going in with just enough money for your bill isn't embarrassing... Then you must not be embarrassed by much.

Who on god's blue earth said anything about the exact amount of money they bring to a restaurant????? That just proves you are rEaChInG for a defense in your favor.

Think about it for a second. A guy orders ONE plate. The Caribian Queen fish dejour' which cost $110.

The guy at the table next to him orders the chicken cordon bleu which costs $14.

That is ONE trip for each one of those plates. But you are saying these guys pay totally different amounts for the same amount of work for both guys.

THIS is how it was explained to me in Europe by quite a few folks and I agree.

There is a reason why these threads/debates will never end in America. The system has flaws and inconsistencies.
