Half Service Restaurant: How Much To Tip?

no matter where i go, i always tip the same: around 15%-20%, or more if the service is exceptional.

Waiters/wairesses are a bunch of lazy arse stuck up bums. Theres no way that their service is worth 20 percent of the food and drinks. A server can handle 6 tables per hour or so. If each table barely eats and gets 50 bucks worth then the server makes 50 bucks an hour for walking food from one side of the room to the other.

From what I've heard from actual people, and as a former waiter/busboy myself, they usually bring in a lot more than minimum wage on average. I was watching Judge Judy or something a few days ago, and this waitress said she was bringing in $500 a week. Anecdotal, but people don't join the service industry because it's all that's available, but because they have the potential to make bank.

if i tip, it's only a couple dollars at thsoe places

lol at what I'm hearing in here.

It's not hard to notice a correlation between people who seem to be making disrespectful comments about Monkeys or treating people like crap and not tipping. That's not even a little surprising to me. Anyone that compared Servers to Monkeys should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. As if someone making less money than you is less of a Human Being.

There's no excuse for either... But at the end of the day, cheap people and people that get off on being dickheads are always going to have a reason for doing so in their minds... That's not going to change. And they're always going to be miserable and angry.

But hey, at least you got to keep that few extra dollars, right? And I bet you telling the Server they suck really showed them and everyone around you how Alpha you are...

Its not hard to see the correlation between people that complain about sub 20% tips and people in the service industry

u dont get less than minimum wage without your bonus..

Neither do they.

Not sure where this myth comes from that someone who depends on tips can earn less than minimum wage.

It's called minimum wage for a reason. Only exception I know of is outside sales.

It literally makes me cringe that some people don't tip 20%. If that's you, here's a little FYI... You embarrass everyone that's with you if you're out in a group. If you don't have the money to tip, you don't have the money to be eating/drinking out, or ordering in.

Cringe away.

I have the money to cover my bill and tip as I see fit.

You... can mind your own business.

True.

A tipped employee engages in an occupation in which he or she customarily and regularly receives more than $30 per month in tips. An employer of a tipped employee is only required to pay $2.13 per hour in direct wages if that amount combined with the tips received at least equals the federal minimum wage. If the employee

Nothing. Those places are glorified fast food chains. They don't get a tip.

You'd feel differently if you were a server.

no i wouldn't at all.

It's not a super hard job, and people work their asses way harder at shittier jobs for less money.

People that say that make me want to not tip, but i wouldn't do that just because some people are pricks. 15%, but anybody asking for 20% deserves nothing.

What do you do?

Serving was a great job and I enjoyed the hell out of it, but it was definitely not an easy job and it didn't pay well at all when you factored in all the time I wasn't actually earning tips (setup, breakdown, etc...)

Do you tip at a cafeteria? I don't see these places as much different than that. You go to the counter, order your food, walk away, and someone cleans the tables occasionally.

i'm in school, but i have worked jobs in which i have to serve people, carry items for them, load their cars etc while making minimum wage.

Got about $10 tips total in like 6 months.

I don't believe i said it's easy, but there are harder jobs, but how much did you earn on average compared to minimum wage?

Yeah maybe you had some nights where you were like "fuck this", but i'm sure there were others where you brought in double what minimum wage is.

I made probably about 10-12 an hour. Granted, some people earned more who had been there longer, worked better sections (bar/cocktail area vs dining).

I miss the job from the social aspect (it was cool to meet all kinds of different people). But I make a whole lot more money now for a whole lot easier of a job (it has it's own/different stress now).

Nope, that's not true at all. If you have enough money to cover the bill, you have enough money to go out. And I never, ever tip 20% unless the service is excellent. 15% should be the max tip people pay, unless the service was out of this world.

Tipping is a reward for good service. It's not part of the bill. You'd do well to remember that if your a waiter or a waitress.

Really wish Springs1 were still around.

on another forum that i frequent, Springs1 is so famous that he's become part of the forum titles.

Don't remember how many posts, but after awhile i had the title of "I do lunch with Springs1"

I'm not, nor have I ever been a waiter. I'm just not a D-bag...
