Half Service Restaurant: How Much To Tip?

Not if I was in a business where your pay is based on how you perform.

And like I said, I usually tip. Only maybe 2-3 times I haven't. It's a bullshit idea that I can't be allowed to get my own drink, but then have a server who never comes around, and never even asks about the food, yet still wants me to pay them. It's obnoxious.

Every business is pay for performance, my friend. Even yours, whatever that may be... The people serving you do not get paid much and rely on tips to make a living. If people don't tip, they aren't able to do so. People screw up, that's life... Why take away from their livelihood because of it. That's just petty, man.

Nothing.

You just described what happens when I order at Carl's jr.

It's not petty at all. It's what tipping is about in America. You tip for an average or good job. You don't tip for poor service. Subsidizing poor serving lowers the quality for everyone. Totally irresponsible behavior.

I think servers are over rated. Won't be surprised if they become more and more phased out with computers. Fine dining can keep them, I see no need for less fancy places to keep them. It's annoying I can't get my own drink to be honest.

Servers live on "slave" wage.
Most servers can't even afford a meal at the restaurant they work at based on the average hourly wage of $2.50 an hour. Blame the lobbyists for creating this standard wage.
If the servers don't make tips, they are practically working for free after tax deductions from paychecks.
Corporations would be foolish to completely give up their slaves.
Some corporations would even cheer for joy if they had an opportunity to shackle you up to a chain and keep you in the dungeon overnight if they could.

Those slaves can earn a tip if they decide to do a good job. That's the whole point. Why should I just hand out money to people? If they don't like the job, leave. If that isn't possible, then do the job well. I'm not going to be swayed into believing I should just hand out money to people for no reason other than they don't make a lot of money. Should I just go to a trailer park and give everyone cash?

And what if I don't have a lot money myself? I should just give what little I have to someone just for breathing? Or should I just not eat out if I don't have a lot of money? Well it's not up to you how I spend my money. And I'll gladly tip if they even do an average job. But if they don't, they don't deserve my hard earned cash.

My favorite is the tip jar out at the DIY frozen yogurt joint.

I come in, grab my own cup, build my own sundae, then weigh it and pay the guy behind the counter. THAT guy has a tip jar.

THAT guy was also a 6'6" 250lb Samoan guy who was giving me the stink eye. You're gawtdamn right I tipped him.

my wife just tipped at a buffet..... dont know what she's thinking. All they did was get drinks. I hate arguing with her on tips, we're pretty much opposite on that issue.

Servers at buffets aren't even real servers, they get you your drinks but otherwise they're glorified bussers.

I would prefer that they just tack on an extra dollar or two to the price of food and be done with this BS of tipping, when I see a burger on the menu that should be the price I pay for it. I shouldn't have to tack on a few bucks "tax" for the iteam of food.

I don't mind the tip jar. You aren't really pressured to tip, at least I don't feel pressured. But if you love the place, get good service, and you feel like tipping, well, you can.

But if the place was like you described where you do everything but hand over your money I wouldn't tip. I'm thinking of a Burrito place I used to go to. It was a unique place considering where I live, and I definitely wouldn't mind tipping there. They do a great job and it's a cool place.

For half service, is probably give half what I'd normally tip.

When I drove a tour bus I used to take my passengers to a place where you order at the front counter, get your drinks yourself and they call your number when your food is ready. You get it yourself. They did have an area where they had table service but we didn't sit there.

The girl at the front counter was annoyed the the Brits and Aussies on my bus didn't tip so she would ask me to tell them to tip in advance. When that didn't work as well as she wanted she decided to start circling the part of the receipt where it said "gratuity not included" right before handing it to them. I thought that was going too far so I started telling them in advance that they didn't have to tip if they didnt want to. I would leave a tip, but I'd tell her that I couldn't force them to tip. If there is no table service I don't think you should have to.

well if u pay at the front counter, how are u gonna know how much to tip when u havent gotten service yet?

At a place like that or buffet where they bring drinks, I usually leave $1 or $2

It's good to know you never have bad days or screw up at your job. Being perfect must be pretty amazing. I'm assuming if you did screw up a little, you'd still want to get paid though?

You a waiter or something?

If you don't do your job well enough you shouldn't get a bonus. Not rocket science. I get bonuses on my job but if I screw up, I don't get it. I don't see the need to cry about it like I should get it just for trying.

They get at least minimum wage.

At least.

Even if they work under an hourly low hourly wage + tips, if tips don't bring in enough money then the proprietor of the establishment has to make up the difference.

That sort of pay scale is super rare though. I dunno where all this "slave wage" BS comes from. Anyone working a job where they get tipped will make at least minimum wage no matter what.

to most wait staff, tip is not a bonus. It's the norm and it's what makes doing their job worth it.

I don't understand.

You get all your own stuff and they expect a tip? You're tipping them for calling your number?

lol, a Monkey could do it? You seem like a very nice person.

The OP description reminds me of Carl's Jr and a few other places that occasionally employ mentally handicapped people...

Nothing.

Apparently you're a cheapskate just like me and everyone else that goes there. Boo Bob boo

Buffets like that I usually do the same if not more. I'm eating a lot, so a lot of plates to clear, I sometimes tip more than I would at a traditional restaurant. Especially the buffet places that go around refilling your drinks.

To servers that bitch about poor tips, I tell them to go visit a local diner during breakfast hours- 5am to 8am, not the 10am when you wake up- and see if you work as consistent and fast as they do. I have a family friend here in San Diego that has owned a popular eatery for over 20 years and he has done that to some of his servers, his parents still own a couple of small diners & he has his own piece of one, very few complain after seeing that workload.
Now, if that morning diner is the job that is frustrating you, I don't know what to say because I'm not in that business but I know my same friend has increased the hourly wage of several waitresses to keep them (California law requires an employer to pay at least minimum wage per hour there is no wage/tip scale).

This is always the crux if this issue. I'm sure they depend on tips. That doesn't mean they deserve them . I depend on my bonus at work. It doesn't mean I earned it by showing up.

That's the whole issue with these discussions. Some people think a tip is something you earn and some people think you deserve it for showing up and not killing someone.

Not to mention this particular thread is about a half service place. Like I said, this is the exact same thing that happens at Carl's jr. If no one has a problem with not tipping at Carl's jr I dunno why it would be a problem to not tip elsewhere for the exact same service.
